It does sound like a clogged cat. Try removing it and see what happens. Should work!

Have you ran ECU codes?

Im not sure for the RPM, but there is such a thing as running in a "slug" mode or whatever... only happens if your OMP is not working.

ok, if you car wont rev above ~2500-3000 than the car is most likely in limp mode. i know this all to well, my car and my friends car are both in limp mode. the only thing that will cause this is the MOP not working. With my car it never threw an error code, just went into limp mode. other cars do throw the code and then go into limp mode. it sounds like you did pull the code for the MOP, right? if you did than you need to replace it. the MOP is located on the front of the engine just below the air pump, its hard to see but just look for 4 clear hoses with oil in them that run up to the top of the block. the electrical connection for the mop is right to the left of the alternator, they are on a braket that also is a mounting point for the alternator. there will be 2 connectors one with 3 wires the other with 6(i think, it might be 8) you cant miss them. the best way to remove the MOP is from under the car, jack it up and you should have a clear view of it. disconnect all the lines going to the MOP before you unbolt it from the block. then slide it right out and throw a new one in there, becareful with the clear lines they might be brittle and crack on you. the MOP from mazda is very expensive so you might want to find a used one from someone in the club.

before you start ripping the MOP off you should probibly check it as the FSM says so, heres a link, goto pages 18-19 for the troubleshooting of the MOP.
