My car has me badly confused.

I have been trying to figure out a problem the car had with shaking at lower rpms in high gear. I finally fixed the problem, but the car still has a bit of a miss to it and bucks at low speeds. I'm thinking its a timing problem, but I haven't been able to check yet due to not having a timing light. The car now has a bigger more confusing problem. It is an 88 TII with a s5 engine. Recently the car started smoking clouds of white. There was fluid leaking from the exhaust so it made me think it could be a bad turbo. I changed the turbo out to another stock s5 turbo and it seemed to fix the problem. It has been fine like that since around February. Now, the car is doing the same thing again but, it will smoke lots of white like a blown coolant seal, then change to blue like oil but not nearly as thick. There is also once again some kind of liquid coming out of the exhaust. It is a golden color like oil but it just smells like exhaust so its hard to say what it is.I have searched and can't figure why it goes from one to the other. I did the champagne test and there were no bubbles that I could see but I'm going to check again because it was getting pretty dark out. No coolant going into the overflow, and the oil is completely full. What could it be? Maybe another bad turbo or rebuild time?
Here are some pics of the white smoke, I didn't get any of the blue smoke.

Could be bad oil control rings or bad coolant seal... or both lol. Is the car eating any of the two fluids?

No both fluids are staying full and there isn't any coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant. It doesn't make a lot of since.

I'm guessing it's probably the turbo again.

I would send your old one out to BNR and get it rebuilt.

he replaces all the seals and does some modifications for $350

I will check the plugs when I get home. I looked on the exit of the turbo last night and didn't see any oil but it was in the tip of the exhaust.

well the smoke is either oil, fuel, or coolant

you need to figure out if its coming from the engine or turbo.

if its oil, it doesn't take much to make smoke like that

I took the cap off of the nipple on the oil filler neck and it took care of the white smoking. There is still some thinner blue smoke but I'm wondering if that is just because the crap left in the exhaust is burning out.

Why would a cap on the nipple on the filler neck........be there in the first place?

Not sure to be honest. It must have been there when I put the motor in the car. I never noticed it until it was brought up.

I'm having a similar problem with a TII with an S5 engine I'm working on. Changed turbos, same problem, newly rebuilt engine... doubt control rings but possibility, someone else setup the engine so maybe they messed up the crank case ventilation. But really, something as simple as the crankcase vent being blocked does this?

Thanks for the inspiration and possible fix for me as well

Yup, filler neck hose was plugged. The tube that goes from the charcoal canister to the oil filler neck was plugged solid. A quick blow of the air nozzle cleared it right out. Now its 85% better and just have to burn the rest out.

Thanks for the idea
