Unhappy Is my car about to die?

Alright. I've been having some problems with my 88 na for the last few weeks and was checking in to see what advice people have to offer. For starters, when I bought the car, sometimes when it had been sitting out in the sun for a few hours and was really hot, when I started it the engine would stay really low (around 1k) and sound like it was about to stall. I'd give it a lot of gas and when the rpms hit 4.5k something would click on and the engine would function like normal.

Recently I had to weld the flange around my catalytic convertor so that my car could pass inspection. Now just about every morning when I start it, there's an abnormal amount of smoke coming out of my car that stays for maybe 45 seconds. This is almost always accompanied by the aforementioned problem. In addition to that, my car now has a tendancy to have a very high idle. Sometimes it's around 1.5k after five minutes of driving, sometimes it's around 2k, and today when I was coming to work, it wouldn't go down below 2750. I am very concerned about this. I did a lot of reading this morning on idle problems and what I hear the most is vacuum leaks but there's definitely something more going on. I read that this could be caused by the O rings around the housing having failed and are allowing coolant to enter the combustion chamber which would just make me cry cus I really dont have much money at all to fix it right now and I absolutely love this car. Let me know what you guys think.

One more thing. Also when the car is at idle and I either turn the steering wheel or get on the brakes, there's a dip in the rpms. Once again, vacuum leak?

it might be the BAC valve going bad (?) (referring to the steering/idle problem)
