TX My car is a !@#$in furnace

okay, its damn hot in my car... but not b/c of the hot TX sun, but b/c of engine/tranny heat creeping up in the cabin. so gay...

a ton of hot air is coming in thru my shifter boot, because theres none of that sweet insulation there. the rubber boots are gone too.

in addition, that shifter gets very warmt. hot enough to be uncomfy to casually hold on to, but not so much as to cause a burn or anything. i have a metal shift ****, not the leather.

I center console is warm to the touch too. esp under the ashtray its a little scorchy hot too.

THE BIG QUESTION:
is this a matter of inferior cabin insulation? or is there something (tranny?) generating too much heat?

i need some knowledge guys

My shifter would always get hot after a little bit of driving until I snagged a new middle boot kit off a fellow forum member. Now it stays pretty cool, but I also still have the little pad of insulation on top of that.

Get a new rubber boot. I even took a big piece of foam and stuck it on top of the transmission. Insulates heat and noise. If you really want to get down and dirty... get some header wrap and wrap your exhaust up.

Make sure all the exhaust heat shields are in place (hack-job mechanics love to leave them off after driveshaft/transmission/exhaust work) and buy all new shift boots.

Coincidentally, just checked the exhaust temps on our '89TII yesterday. The mufflers were running 330 degrees and the cat was at 1190, so if no insulation or shielding you're sitting in an oven.

The heat shields are attached to the underbody above the exhaust system. They extend from about midway on the firewall all the way down to nearly the end of the driveshaft.
