whoa... so...LazyRoller, boi... do u know what a BOV does? maybe you should FIGURE IT OUT, eh?
I'm thinking if you did know what it does, you wouldn't be asking these questions....

In fact, I would not be too surprised if you haven't read the instructions for this BOV of yours....

....do you know what BOV stands for??

Dude, I know what the climate control in my car does but if you asked what those motor noises are when I push a button to blow air on my feet I couldn't tell you what is going on in there.

Ah hell...Roller man your post is as vauge as they get. If you want some help stop being cool and give us some details.

IF you left out the BOV part in your post I would start to think you are talking about breast pump.

You are going to need extra parts to install it. Check with HKS and see if they will sell you the rest of the 87-91 RX-7 SSQV "Kit". It will probably cost you $150-200. Ask them for the instructions while you are at it.

Lazy roller: sorry man.... I shouldn't have said all that $hit...
But honestly, there are a lot of places where you can learn stuff like this yourself... (ok, so it is relevant to RX-7's... but....) ...I think that before you put the money into buying a BOV or other bolt-on bits you should take the time to learn it's function... thats all...

Big woogie: bad day, ok?

Hey Lazy roller don't feel to bad if you DON'T know what a BOV is! I am a novice but think it is a Blow Off Valve! If I AM right about that I STILL don't know exactly what it does! That is why I come HERE, to learn this stuff! These guys KNOW THERE STUFF! Well, the also have "bad days" as well ! Hey, who doesn't? Good luck to you man!

OK, Here is a question about BOVs. I am only asking this because I really don't know even though I have been an automotive professional for many years.
What is the difference between a blow off valve and a wastegate? It seems to me that they are both doing about the same function in releasing pressure from the intake. I understand how a wastegate operates and releases pressure when it senses that the turbo is still producing some boost even though the throttle plate is closed. I know that this prevents the pressure from pushing back against the compressor. How does the BOV differ?

No, the wastegate has nothing to do with the intake. On an internally wastegated turbo, its inside the turbine housing, and bypasses exhaust gas into the downpipe, via an actuator that has a vac/boost line plumbed to it from the compressor housing. This is how the boost is controlled, and since the S4 wastegate hole is so small, it can't keep up. This is where the boost creep and boost spike problems come from.

External wastegates are slightly different in construction, but serve the same purpose.

No, you’ve got all your components mixed up! What you have described is a blow-off valve. The wastegate is part of the exhaust side of the turbo and is what sets the maximum boost the turbo produces. Compressor outlet pressure (boost pressure) is sent to the wastegate actuator and pushes on a diaphragm. When that pressure overcomes the force of a spring, the actuator opens the wastegate valve in the exhaust housing. This bypasses exhaust gases around the turbine instead of through it. The turbo then maintains that boost level because of the equilibrium set up between the boost pressure and turbine speed.

EDIT: Damn, beaten by Felix!

Oh, and to think that all this time I didn't know. Well, now I know, so look out! I am dangerous when I get some knowledge!
Thanks for answering so quickly Felix and NZ.
