My 89 GTU is dead !!

I've been having Idling proplems and having to change
plugs about every 1500 miles. You get in to start up and
nothing happens, like the battery is diconected, except
the Idiot lights will light. I thought my cluth switch went
out and had it towed to the shop. He said he put a new set
of plugs in and all is fine. 1500 miles later same thing all
over. This time I changed the Plugs and it started right
up.

I found that my TPS is bad and have been driving it all
week-end unplugged. It has run better unplugged than
when it's plugged in.

I don't know if this is more plug fowling problems or the
fuel system, pressure, pump, strainer or what.

Any suggestions? I think my 1st step is to put in new plugs for the 4th time in about 4500 miles..

This time is different, the Engine rotates but the car won't
start. I kept trying to start it last night and smoke came
out from under the car that looked and smelt like exaust.

What plugs are you running? BUR7/9EQ? BUR6/8EQ?

Regular plugs shouldn't foul that fast. If you have "cold" or race plugs in - that could be a contributing factor.

How are your plug wires? Timing?

I'm useing BUR/EQ NKG(R). I'm thinking they were fowling
due to the bad TPS. I just unplugged it this week-end. I
believe it was flooding my car during Idle. After I unplugged
it it Idles alot better, but has some slight backfire during
deacceleration. Nothing big just small pops.

How is your MPG with TPS unplugged ?

When you unplug the TPS, the ECU thinks you are at WOT so you are running very rich, and that's probably why the plugs get fouled so fast.

Do yourself a favor and get a new used TPS

The car runs much better with the TPS unplugged. Before
I was having problems with the car dieing and sluggish
at take off. After unplugging TPS the car is much more responsive. I plan on getting a new TPS, but 1st I would
Like to clean the old one to see if it comes back to life.

Someone greased the plungers real heavy with a heavy
gear grease. I don't know if a TPS should be greased
like that. I am going to remove it and spray it good with
contact spray cleaner. If It doesn't do any good I'm going to
get a new TPS.

Also to answer your question I was getting about 11.5
MPG, changed O2 sensor and went to 13 mpg. After
unplugging TPS I went to about 14.5 MPG.
