my 87 rx-7
Hey guys,
I just got my 87 non turbo rx-7. The previous owner had no clue what was wrong with it. It turned over but would not crank so I replaced the spark plugs. it has been sitting for a long time so smoke came out really bad. I ran it for a minute and it cleared up. Now it will crank up and then die before it idles. I think it is because I need some gas though (hehe). When I was running it I did noticed that a occasional loud sqeaking came form what I beleive is the oil pump (what ever you add oil to). I checked the oil adn it needs some bad. It is really low. My question is what is the normal operating temp. and oil pressure? Any suggestions on cleaning out the motor? I have a pretty good grasp on the operation of the enigne and the conspepts. Man, no one ever told me these things were that cool! Oh, my head light is stuck in teh open position is there a fuse for the retractor motor?
thanks,

Normal operating temp. on an 87 is 1/3 up the guage. If you have a real guage, it should read 180 degrees. Normal oil pressure is 30 psi at idle (750 rpm), and 60 or above at > 2000 rpm. A little lower, keep an eye on it. A lot lower, investigate and fix (could be the guage/sender as well as a real engine problem). To clean out the motor gradually, try Marvel Mystery oil in the oil and gas. If you want to clean it out quickly, water injection works, but be careful, if a large chunk of carbon breaks off, it can break an apex seal, killing the engine. Also, if you have low compression, this can be caused by the apex seals being stuck. The ATF treatment will fix this if that is the cause. For the stuck up headlight , there is a row of fuses in the engine compartment, on the drivers side in front of the strut tower. Take the cover off, the fuse closest to the outside is the retractor fuse (if it is labelled, it will be RET).
One note of warning. If the oil is very low, do NOT drive this car. Rotary engines depend on oil for cooling as much as they do water (the rotors are entirely oil cooled). I would suggest not adding oil, but changing it with a decent 10W30 (new filter, of course) to be sure. Good luck!
