Smile My 10th Anny's engine bay is painted - pics!

If you've been following the other thread, my 10th Annivesary is in the midst of a MASSIVE buildup/restoration. This weekend I finally got the first big step done - repainting the engine bay.

Absolutely EVERYTHING was stripped out of the engine bay - every bolt, bracket, and clip. There were a few clips that I couldn't access the back side of to remove, so they were taped off.

The driver's side frame rail had a lot of paint missing and rust from a leaky master cylinder (it was bad when I got the car). I completely sanded down that frame rail to bare steel. Other places with rust or problems were totally sanded and stripped as well. The entire finish of the engine bay was sanded down, and the new holes that need to be cut for my Greddy intercooler piping were cut.

I painted the area under the headlights black - that area is pretty out of the way, and attracts a lot of dirt and the like, so I figured black would look really good there. I just did a simple paint job there - primed with a spray can, and painted with black engine enamel. Turned out really nice looking.

The rest of the engine bay I primed with Krylon Rust Tough Primer. After then prepping it with a tack rag and some solvent, I sprayed the bay with Interlux (I think that's the name) Premium Yacht Enamel, Gloss White. Yep, it's boat paint - the marine industry makes some REALLY heavy duty paint, and I was very pleased with the results, especially since it's my first time wielding a spray gun .

Anyhoo, here's the pics -

I put on 2 coats this weekend, sanding it down after the first coat. Time will tell how well it holds up, but it already looks a MILLION times better than the yellowed, scratched-up paint that was in there!

Looks nice Dale, the omly thing I would recommend doing different is to use "ZERO RUST" as your primer.

Yeah, I can't remember what the name was of the primer I used - it's a Zinc-based primer, and is designed to knock the snot outta rust . I was very pleased with the quality of it - it went on FANTASTIC.
