Heyo guys, I was just playing with a new (To me), product today: "Dupli*Color Vinyl & Fabric Color." No, i'm not getting paid by the company or anything, but I know a lot of people out there want black interiors, but they're getting hard to come by, and expensive when you find them in good shape. I only used it on plastic so far, but according to the label, it works for "Upholstery, Carpet, Door Panels, Seat Trim, Dashboards, and more." I got it at Advance Auto, it cost 3.98(I think, maybe 4.50 or 5), and I bought two cans.

I just wanted to do something about my stock plastic pieces, after 18 years, my 86 GXLs' interior plastic is looking pretty shabby. I didn't touch Cracked/Broken pieces, just ones that were scoffed up or faded, as I have replacements coming in for my broken ones. I think it looks awesome I couldn't believe the difference between the stock grey and the nice black they are now. All I had to do was clean the parts with soapy water (i used Dawn), and then wash it clean, and dry it off. I think the pictures would describe it better than I can, so i'll break those out in a second. Things I noticed:

-The dye is sweet to work with, only takes about 5 minutes to dry.

- I did two coats to each piece, with 5 minutes in between coats.

- I armor-all'd all of the pieces about 10 minutes in the sun (after the last coat) The Armor-all REALLY makes them nice and shiney.

- It does not rub off, I tried scraping it with my nail, rubbing it with my fingers, etc. It seems to be on there pretty good.

- I've never got to check out a black interior in good shape, but this has to be DAMN close to one

Thank you for the report. I am looking at a black interior conversion on Mr. Gray, who has that hideous 80s burgundy interior, which is now fading into a sick pink.

Once you get some wheels on that beast and lower it a little, you are going to have one krazay eyecatching piece of machinery!

Awsome, should this work on the black plastic in the engine bay as well? I have tried everything to make that stuff better, and none of it has worked so far.

 

fcfdfan - You're welcome, I was a bit worried about what it woudl do the the pieces, but i figured I could replace them, grey interiors are the most common anyway I would be interested to know what happens if you apply them to a burgandy interior, if you do, lemme know

hey good stuff, i might do this to mine. What about seats? I have leather seats out of a series 4 savanna. Still have to put them in my car but they are grey, rekon i could do this with them? The guy who sold me it said i should. Will it rub off tho from repeated use?

 

To be honest, I'm not sure, I haven't used it on anything like that, i'd imagine that it's not made for it. The labe says "ideal for touching up vinyl, simulated leather, and fabric..." Maybe call the company and ask? www.duplicolor.com is their website.

The Spyder - How has it held up over the years? and how does it look on carpeting? I'm figuring, if it last two or three years at this price, i'll just keep redoing it

For anyone wondering how it looks assembled, here's my door.
While I had it dissassembled, i replaced the carpeting in the middle with some naugahide (that imitation leather) that we had laying around. I'm getting a grey carpet shipped in, so i'm leaving the bottom grey as the transistion. I did shampoo it though (Thanks mom!).
(remember: This was a stained, fading and scoffed grey door)

that is not gonna work on the door sills, it'll come off in one or 2 days, because i tried the same thing.
i'll suggest using some truck bed paint for the door sills, those are hard to come off

Mine is already gray, but I would like some black carpet and other accent pieces. Anyone used it on carpets? I used in on my gauge pod and it has held up great, but thats about it.

 

that looks great, im glad you posted about that, even with my black interior in good shape there are some things that have faded a bit. its a great alternative to finding a nice s5 interior, which im pretty sure there are very few left. and all the little parts that always break are always broken, i have yet to find or see a rx7 with its demister grills not all cracked up. anyways, get it all back in your car and take some pics. its funny i sold my first car 87 se partly because the blue interior was not looking so good, i mean that blue is ok but looks dated makes the car feel old, i wish id kept the car and dyed the interior...o well good job.

I did the same exact thing with the same exact stuff for my grey interior! Worked great!

 

Wonko, I have gray leather door inserts if you want them.

edit: another tip, clean the tires with some tire cleaner and clean the rims as well. Use some leather conditioner on the bra if it is indeed leather.
