Must pass inspection before I go...(liscence plate light ??'s)

I failed inspection for my rear liscence plate lights not working. Apparently the source of the problem is too far down for me to deal with now as I am leaving for school Friday night and every day is pretty much jam packed with loads of packing and sorting out car stuff before I go. Basically I might only have a few hours to work on the car, and I don't want those hours to be troubleshooting. I was just wondering if basically there was a requirement that the lights must turn on and off with the regular lights or if I could ghetto rig something with a 12v line and some lights through there that were on all the time. I'm in NJ btw, but i'm sure the laws on this one would be pretty similar.

if it just the plate lights, then it is probably burnt out bulbs or you swapped S5 lights onto a S4.

Bulbs worked on and off for a little bit, then just went out, and if I use power from another source it works fine, just not getting power from it. All the other lights are working fine though.
