You might have to loosen up a couple of bolts here and there in the exhaust system to help you out. I've always used .041 safety wire to form a loop around it, then clamped the ends with vise-grips and yanked on it that way. I've heard some guys use coat hangers. In any case, if you're breaking the new one, you've got to loosen some things up to allow you some more play...

I placed a block of wood and jack under the pipe and raised it so I could put the doughnuts on. They are a PITA

One thing that helped me a lot was to have someone else pushing/pulling on the muffler to make it closer to the car's hanger, so there's just that much less distance for you to have to put the donut on. Sounds simple, but it helps.

Do it your own way, I'll do it mine...All of my donuts are original, 17 years old, with 192,000 miles on 'em, and have been on & off at least 7 or 8 times...Sometimes you have to do a little extra work to make the job that's kicking your *** a little easier

Put a good copper or nickle based anti-seize on your exhaust bolts, and you'll never have a problem with them again...
