the MSD ignition box i have in my car is not hooked up and it came with the car when i bought it. if the box is messed up, will it in turn mess up anything on my car? is there any way to check and see if the box is fully functional

Royal pain in the *** to test...
The way I usually check is to hook-up all wires, except for the thin white wire - you'll need a coil for this.  Run a spark plug wire into the coil (makes this part easier) and put the other end close to a "ground" point.  Now, once everything is hooked up, touch the thin white to "ground" and then lift - when you lift the thin white off, you should see/hear a zap from the spark if the box still works.
