MotorTrend ICoTY 1986 retrospective
Thought this was interesting: https://www.motortrend.com/news/fina...-fun-to-drive/
I bought a 1987 Turbo fresh out of college. What great car.

traditionally, Motor Trend has never been my favorite magazine, but it's had it's moments. this isn't one of them though. i can see maybe staff and editors reaching out to friends and contacts to get cars to make this photo shoot and video happen, but somehow i think a better effort could have been made to get an actual '86 or at least an '87 ... or any S4 that's not a 10th Anniversary model. that probably only bothers me because i know what it is and it wasn't 1986. i was willing to look past it though. however, i remember reading part of the article and them referring to a "fourth" generation Rx-7 that won in 1993. that was what made me sort of roll my eyes at the whole thing. that said, i am grateful they mentioned it (and that car looked stunning, by the way) even if they sort of painted themselves into a corner and had no choice.
i was also impressed by two other tidbits:
1. the Citroen's headlights (i thought that was really, really cool)
2. you being able to buy an '87 Turbo fresh out of college

As for buying a Turbo right out of college, it was sold as used even though it was on the showroom floor. The story was they guy who bought it found out he and his wife were expecting a child shortly afterwards and needed a family car. I figured he scared the crap out of himself one time and traded it in for something more pedestrian (the rear quarter panel had been resprayed). Anyway, it was much cheaper than a new Turbo for sure, but still took most of my paycheck to cover the loan. Not the most responsible financial decision I ever made. I'm guessing no one here is judging me too harshly in that regard ;-)
