Motor wont go over 1750rpm!!!!!!!

Okay, I have had my 7 for over 2 years now, and about 5 times it has done this to me:
Press down on gas and when rpms hit 1750, the motor drops back down to idle, then tries to rev up again, hits 1750 and drops down etc...
So, this seems to happen when the temperature is hotter, however my temp gage usually shows the same temp as when this doesnt happen. This also has only happen when starting my car. Other than that, I've been driving happily for the last two years until now.
I was on the freeway today, it was about 90 degrees out, and I was in stop and go traffic. I had my eye on the temp gage and all looked ok. Then, as I tried to accellerate in 2nd gear at about 20 miles an hour, I realized I was going nowhere and the same scenario I just described happened again. I pulled over, opened the hood hoping that maybe airing it out would help. It did, and I drove off. Then after I parked it this happened again. About 2 hours later I fired her up and she drove home no problem. Does anyone know whats wrong with my car, and if so, how do I fix it????
Thanks for your help.

I had a problem with my '92 Civic just last week where my distributor was taking a crap. It was misfiring so the ECU put the car into limp-home mode and it wouldn't go over 3500 RPM. I don't THINK that's the case, but you might want to make sure it's not an ECU issue that's cutting spark at exactly 1750 so it won't go over that RPM.

I'd say the tps plunger is sticking intermittently.

There's no limp home mode on a 86. No limp stuff on a 86-88.

The two times that happened in my car were from the TPS crapping out on me (like Hailers said) and from the intercooler piping coming off.

You need a multimeter to adjust your TPS...check here for how to:

Yeah. Check it out. The problem with mine was that the plunger was sticking intermittently. So I could check and make sure it was adjusted correct, and it was, but not find anything wrong. The only way I found it was when the event happened and I got out and lifted the throttle away from the plunger. I noticed no spring pressure holding the plunger extended. I'm talking about the spring internal to the plunger. The plunger was just flopping around moving with gravity, but the internals were not moving.

Also, your problem could be something totally different. This is but one possibility

Ok, I'll check the tps. Thanks for all your help. Is there anything else I should check?
