Motor shutdown while driving!

Today I was coming home and motor on my '86 sport model (minor mods listed in my signature) decides that it wants to shutdown dropping the RPM's straight down to 0.

So I'm coasting, but I I still can start it up and keeping driving, until it happens again. It did this about 4 times and I was barely able to get home.

Once I got it in my garage, it would not start, so I let it sit for a while. I came back and it start right back up, but when I revved the motor I could hear a scraping noise, kinda of like metal to metal.

Anybody experience this problem before? or
Does anybody have any suggestions on what it might be?

History on this motor:

-This N/A motor I bought used and has 140k on it
-It burns more oil than what it should be burning
-Have not had any previous problems, other than the occasion flooding

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks

-Jon

also, i just found a random ticking noise from the area where the BAC Valve is. also that grinding noise is coming from the front of the motor but I cant pinpoint it (nothing that is drivin by the belts). O ya it only grinds during revving.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

-Jon

Does it have full power on acceleration? Since it starts right back up, that almost sounds like spark issues (grounding or overheating coils). Or a loose wire somewhere. Any check engine lights, or beeping?

If you've got excessive burning oil and grinding, try cutting open the old oil filter and see if you see any metal shavings. If not, then the grinding could be a old pully.

srry i moved thread to https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/engine-shutdown-deceleration-641122/

thanks for the reply, i have the same power as before, and I will see if i kept one of my old filters around and check it out.

No check engine lights or beeping occuring, but i did notice a lot of carbon buildup on my plugs.
