Motor is just spinning...

Hey guys, need some insight. This morning went to start the car and it would crank very slowly, almost like battery dying. I stopped, thinking WTF? Tried again and this time it would just spin, almost like no compression. I'm not sure if the motor spins, or if the starter just spins as I had no time to check.
Prior to that, the car run top notch.
Any words of wisdom?
PH
BTW, it is 89 non turbo

Did you check the battery voltage to see if it was good, make sure the headlights are bright and all other electrics work fine? If it sounds like a loud spinning that's prolly the starter not engaging with the flywheel to spin it.

Its flooded because it cranked over slowly. Recharge/replace the battery and unflood. Then figure out why the battery died in the first place. Common causes are a bad alternator or stuck headlight retractor motor.

Also rememer to squirt auto trans oil into the spark plug holes when you unflood, and disconnect the fuel fuse behind the left headlight underneath the air box because when you flood it and try to crank it too many times the oil film that provides the compression gets swiped clean by the rotor. Also step on your gas pedal and hold it down while you crank it.

Use oil instead of ATF. It's nicer and won't smoke so much. Also less change of fouling the plugs.
