Motor finally let go...

My J-Spec finally **** the bed Sunday night, I lost compression on the rear rotor. Cruisin down the highway at 60MPH in 4th gear, I put the clutch in and hit 5th. I got up to about 65 and the car tried to throw me out the windshield, I thought I hit a dead body in the road. I had little or no response from the throttle and my A/F went to full lean so I jacked up the fuel from 1K-4K to about +30 to get me home. I parked it and went inside, I didn't even bother popping the hood, I pretty much knew what had happened .

I left it alone until Wednesday night and I started it to pull in the garage. It started fine and idled fairly well .........hmmmmmm, maybe I didn't chuck a seal. I put in reverse and let the clutch engage, it would not move, the motor kept bogging like it was being starved. So, I cranked up the S-AFC to + 30 again, and finally got it to move w/o dying. Got it into the garage and popped the hood, pulled the UIM off hoping to find a injector clip off or something amiss, but to no avail . I got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach and slowly put the UIM back on, moved over to the plugs and pulled the T1. Cranked it over, 3 good strong pulses. Replaced T1 and pulled T2, one very weak woosh followed by nothing but dead silence. **** .

Ever since day 1, the rear rotor has had low compression, 85-90, while the front had 120. My car did not like to idle under 1K...could it have been because of the big difference in comp #'s? I kept trying ATF, but nothing.

Anyway, so I have a Microtech LT8 coming very soon and I'm gonna need a motor. So, I've always wanted an -RE, and I guess now is a perfect opportunity. I know TonyTurboII has this set-up and I'd really like to hear from him and his experiences, but is there anyone else out there that has any thoughts?

I guess if all else fails, I will settle with an S5, but I know I won't be happy in the end....

I'm a 160,000 mile NA guy with turbo envy.

You are my reality check.

I'll bet that 3 months from now when it's all rebuilt, you will tell yourself - "Wow, I should have done this sooner"

dam dude sorry to hear that...... wht did chris let you keep that motor . i figured he would have sent it back.. remember the first one...... it smoked us all out..... dude you might spend a little more but yank it apart see what is broke... replace a housing and rotor... chris has em right... just buy a rebuild kit from rotaryaviation.com 800.00 w/viton seals...... while your there port the **** or sent that **** ground to me and maybe we can work out some fat porting and other mods... have you read the racing beat cat.. there is other things you can do like replacing the oil jets(ball and spring) the webber jets(best) couple other things ...I know your goals with it go all out . becuase when is the next time you'll have the oppppp

Same **** happened to me, but mine was the front rotor. I was on the highway cruisng also when the car started feeling like an earthquake. I was like ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!. But two engines in 8 years i guess aint that bad. My LT8 is also on the way.

I know -RE's are badass, but I dont think it's worth the extra money unless you can afford it. I'm sure you can get the same results with an s4. I would use that money towards a bigger turbo and manifold.

Jodi,
Yeah, it does suck.......right before my Microtech gets here too

The first J-Spec that I had that smoked us all out at that BBQ got sent back and was replaced with this one. When we got it in, we had to drag in around the parking lot for about 1/2 hour to get it to fire up. Once running, it wouldn't idle well under 1K. So I set it at 1100 and it ran fine. A few weeks later I did a comp check on it and found the front had 120 and the rear had 90. I'm guessing that was why it wouldn't idle well because the difference in comp #.

Anyway, I might take you up on that offer for porting. I did locate an -RE in CA for sale. I'll see what that guy has to say and get back with ya, OK? If I do stay with this block, I want a port on the primaries and bridge on the secondaries along with S5 internals.

No, it's a twin turbo with smaller turbos than the FD. The UIM also has HUGE intake runners.

I sold my S-AFC and my FCD. I have a 2.5" DP that I will probably let go since my 3" will be going on if I can find someone to mandrel bend me a custom midpipe. My AFM & boost sensor will be for sale if anyone needs it. I've also got an S5 turbo with a little shaft play and a perfect maifold that I may get rid of, if the price is right. That's pretty much it...

I've decided to get the S5 for this car and use the -RE for my vert conversion. This way I don't have to pull the -RE out of my coupe and into the vert this winter. Also, I can sell my coupe complete instead of just a chassis.
