Most power out of exhaust/intake?

Bear with me, I have a good amount of knowledge on cars... but I'm not exactly a mechanic. I'm looking for basic cheap ways to upgrade my 91 convert NA.

What would be the best exhaust to throw on there? I was thinking a dual Borla and just take the Cat off of it, and run full straight pipes to the back to limit not hurt restriction. Advice?

As for intake, I'm considering a cold air since I'm not running a turbo so I could still gain power. Would the cold air intake yield a noticeable difference I've heard it might only be 3-15hp? and what about performance chips? I hear chips are almost all bogus or very ineffective. I've heard jet is ok, but I honestly don't want to drop $350+ and only get 1-5 hp out of it.

I eventually plan on dropping a TII S5 rebuild in and then redoing my drive axle and rear end suspension. As well as lightening the car up with racing bucket seats, ripping out a few internals (A/C, etc...) and dropping a few Fiberglass parts on it (this is waaay later down the road). So... would a non-turbo exhaust be a waste of time, as well as the cold air intake? Wouldn't a CAI just syphon air away from the turbo?

you probably don't want to hear it but you will get your most bang for your buck with a turbo. Maybe save the money and work on other elements of the car until you can save up for a swap or turbo your 6 port.

Kind of had an incling that's what I was going to be told. Would it be safer to just go out and buy a S5 TII and do a full swap, or could I rebuild the engine and have a turbo tossed on and not have to worry about it blowing seals if I had stronger seals on it? Trying to figure out which would be cheaper in the long run.

I know a used TII will run $800-1200 (engine w/ turbo). I know a rebuild on that is $2,500-3k. Either way I'm looking at what... $4-5k? Just for a rebuilt S5 swap.

Welcome to the club. :-)

Your questions are the most over asked question on this site. :-)

That is why we have the sticky at the top of this section to the FAQ section.

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/frequently-asked-questions-2nd-generation-rx-7-faq-fc-494667/

From that section-

How do I add a turbo to my NA 13B?
What Turbo kits can I add onto my non turbo RX-7?
There are no longer kits formally made at the time of this post, however there are companies from time to time that do make available non turbo to Turbo Kits. Because most of these companies stop building the kits, or go out of business in short time, it is impossible to keep active links for them.

Most people that turbo a non turbo make their own kits:
Using the stock TII turbo, exhaust manifold with spacer, NA intakes and NA ECU:

unless you have an awesomely rebuilt NA engine, swap in the turbo engine. No point in rebuilding an NA block only to turbo it.

Also, SEARCH. These topics, both the quest for power, performance chips, and especially turbo projects have been covered so many times it makes my head spin.

Pro Tip: use the advanced search function.

edit: oh yeah, and the faq. ^^^beat me to the punch

I'll be nice + tell you my experience with mods.

DO A TUNE UP BEFORE YOU MOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started out w a 91 NA. First thing I did was throw an apexi filter on. It growled a bit + gave a tiny bit more throttle response. Cleared the engine bay a bit too which is nice.

(You could always use some kind of flat heat shielding + cut a hole to let your filter through so that the hot engine air won't get to the filter. It would be cheap + work.)

Got some coilovers on my FC. This was def. better than any exhaust intake mod IMHO.

Then after that I got a cat delete pipe + down pipe. This was pretty nice. I could feel it pull in 5th gear more. It was also louder.

I put on some apexi dual N1 exhaust. Again, lot more louder now since it's basically a full exhaust. A bit more power now too, but also a decent amount lighter than stock.

Then a few years later I did a full turbo swap. I ended up getting a jspec motor, driveshaft, diff, + axles. I changed all my mounts out to delrin one's at the same time too. This by far was the best upgrade I've ever done. I was able to use the exhaust I used from the cat back. Although later on I bought a corksport 80mm downpipe + test pipe which were even better than what I had.

After that I got a corksport FMIC kit. This made the turbo spool a bit later, dropped PSI a tiny bit, but cools the intake temp much better than the TMIC as long as I'm still moving.

Then I got a custom turbo inlet duct pipe. I felt the turbo come alive + become more responsive.

A buddy of mine who has had a good amount of dyno time (400+hp corrado) told me that I'm over 200HP.

Hopefully that answers a few questions. I'd go with a jspec turbo motor as opposed to the turbo NA motor. A lot more bolt on mods can be found for that. Unless you have the tools + time to do custom stuff.
