mop block off question

I'm running premix and the front cover (series 5) still has the shaft assembly in it and I have the block off plate. My question is can I machine a piece of aluminum or even easier, stack several dimes or washers in there to keep the shaft from sliding back and forth after the plate has been installed or does the shaft and/or the entire assembly have to come out?
