Monza Exhaust: Quality?
Monza Exhaust: Quality?
I came across this on e-bay and wanted any input from other board members. I want to improve my 91 vert's performance, and exhaust seems the best starting point. The price is good at $350, but everyone here seems to favor the racing beat setup.

Although I have no direct experience with a Monza exhaust on an RX-7, I believe they are best known for being cheap rather than good. For just a couple hundred more, you could get the Borla cat-back setup which is a proven, quality part. I had one on my '90 GTU from 1998 through early this year and sold it when I parted out that car. It still looked and worked pretty much like new, and always had a nice tone to it as well.
Also, I think the four tailpipe look doesn't fit the FC bumper very well since there are two curved recesses for tailpipes and the four pipes of the Monza setup are quite a bit wider than the allotted space. When you see someone who has done it, there is a "square peg in a round hole" look to it that to me looks very half-assed, unless of course you are also going to replace the bumper with something aftermarket.

Junk.
Had this exhaust back in '98, fit was not good, had to hack some of the piping to fit properly. not a big fan of dual tips either. IMO the y-pipe is a lil small too. Spend the extra $$, and get the good stuff. (e.i, RB, apexi....)

My old Z came with a Monza exhaust and it began rusting almost immediately.
That cool looking black crinkle finish paint will fall off within a week leaving the mild steel tubing unprotected and on the way to ruin.
I wouldn't bother with it.
I have a monza exhaust on my 88 N/A. The only reason i bought was because it was cheap. For the price i paid it worked well. My only real complaint is that the black paint melted right off with the heat of the exhaust. For the money I think the racing beat is well worth it and i think it's the best option for the FC.

Stay away...I was trying to put one on my car and there was nothing I could do to make it fit right. Slip-on joints, aluminized parts, etc. I ended up returning it the same day I picked it up. I got a Dynomax cat-back system, which fit better, but the materials aren't any better. I should have gone with a Borla, or even better, something like a Racing Beat, but didn't want to wait to save up.
Lesson learned.

you cannot beat the price but you get what you pay for. They are known for being cheap but I don't think they hold up well to the rotary heat. If you have a F'ed up exhaust and you need to replace it on a budget then do it. If you are cheap then I recommend you save a lil longer and go with the Racing Beat.
Thanks
I appreciate all the advice. And fast too.
I've never heard of Monza and after reading the replies, I now know why. I'll just suck it up and pay for the RB. Sound doesn't matter, but quality and a few more ponies does.

Umm... I mentioned it.
Since the RB setup isn't 100% stainless, I would recommend the Borla to anyone (obviously not the OP) who drives in a place where rust is an issue.

Don't bother with Monza/Pace Setter. It's horrible. It looks horrible, it sounds horrible, it fits like ****, and it will fall apart in no time.
I used it once. Only because I had no choice and I didn't pay a dime for it.
