modified my stock TMIC, with Great Results!

Im currently running a 60-1 on my 10th AE, with an Rtek 1.7 and i kept noticing my factory TMIC was really hot. You could not touch it after the car had been running, so i knew it was just heat soaking really bad.

So, after thinking about it, i looked at the ARC TMIC, and the HKS TMIC and saw little difference between them and the factory one. That is of course other than the fancy dress up top that seals it to the hood, and that stupid bottom heat shield.

I decided to mess with it and ended up pulling the heat shield off the bottom by grinding off the rivets. I then went out and beat the hell out of my car, running several 1/4 mile drags and always trying to keep it in boost. I pulled over immediately afterwards, popped the hood, and put my hand directly on the TMIC, stupid right? WRONG. The intercooler was surprisingly COLD I would have never though how much it effected it, but DAMN!

Dont get my wrong, i know its nowhere near what an FMIC would be as far as dropping IAT's but it sure made a HUGE difference. and i know the factory installed it to keep heatsoak down when sitting in traffic, but i haven't seen any differences in IAT's after sitting in traffic. I suggest that anyone with a stock TMIC give it a try because it helped me significantly.

i think doing that as well as perhaps a spray tank that kicks on if the iats are high enough would help alot.

Traffic causes heat soak, not cannonball runs

Hi,
after drivin' round in that setup do you see any drawback?
I'm using my S4 just for fun and if there's no major problem going now and then in city (not traffic jams, just a drive around) Is it worth wasting some time removing the shield then? It's an easy step back anyway...

Thanks,
Matthieu

I did this mod like a year or so ago and it does work. And i can tell you it does make quite a difference. Think the shield on the bottom blocks the air flow. I got the idea from a jspec engine i got that had it already done. I was bored and had a few extras laying around and a simple mod for a little cooler air.

Try putting around in the city while keeping in boost and see what happens. If the IC temp stays down then we have a winner. But at higher speeds the hood scoop works like it should.

It works i have had it on two of my engines and for about a year and it does keep it cooler i really only drive city miles any way. What do you have to lose execpt for the shiny heat shield and 15-20 mins of you time.
