Arrow Members... I bring a '91 Turbo for your appraisal

I have just visited this car and have been told that he wants $5,400 for it.

I say... no way.

I offered $3000.
He said he would think about it.

Should I go lower?

Please look at the pictures below carefully to see what you can.
I apologize for the flash shots, I didnt know it was on.

Please note:
there is oil in the intercooler
The Compression bumps 60 PSI evenly on both rotors (Should be 85 right?)
there is a scrape/dent in the front driver side nose and door.
the interior needs an overhaul
The cpu, light cluster, and logicon need soldering
the A/C doesnt work
The rear hatch area is in good condtion
the antenna is shot
the sunroof is shot
the car runs smooth
the ECU had no codes because the battery was dead. (oh well)
Paint in good condition, but oxidized badly
Acid burns or fire damage on pullys/parts in battery area? (odd)

Questions:
Are the seats right?
Is the idiot light cluster the right one with those square lighted indicators.
Is this the right steering wheel?
the stereo had the EQ in it, is that rare?
the exhaust might be original, is it?
ABS on a turbo... rare?

Here are all the pictures:

Note the ABS and turbo inlet parts for anything odd.
Can you see the oil buildup on the hose clamp?

NOte here the rust and pitting on the pullys and compressor.
Fire? Acid?

Another shot of the turbo intake ducting.

And another with flash (does this reveal the oil?)

Note the idiot lights are full square indicators and not lit symbols... is this right?
See the shift boot? Yuk.

These seats came with it?
What about the steering wheel, I have not seen that before.

A bad flash shot, but the wheel shape is apparent.
Note the missing headlight ****.

The rear hatch and cover are in nice shape. (considering)

Stock Exhaust?

Defect in bas of psgr window door panel
Broken psgr window switch (hard to see missing trigger)

Tail lights.. in good condition...

Missing VIN tag. Hmmm explain THAT one to the PO-LEECE.

Heres the vin.

Dent in nose.

Dents in door. Similar on other side.

OH... and the engine smokes alot on startup.

Okay, whats your opinioin on the value?

Please let me know If i missed anything.
This would be my first turbo.

Steering wheel looks like the one on my 91. The seats are S4. Man, I think $3k is high, considering the oil in intercooler means new turbo, and the low compression numbers.

The idiot lights look like they're from an S4. Shouldn't the compression be at least 90psi per bump?

seats and wheel same as mine. I think my lights are square but I can't remember, I think all S5 turbos came with ABS. I had EQ. mine has tons of oil and crud there on the outside. I'm sure all do after 13 years. it's what's inside the pipes that's important. but it'll have some no matter what.

Well in all fairness, this area cracks alot and the carfax comes up clean.

I know that the engine need a rebuild and a turbo.

So the real question is...

What to offer him??

I say $3k is VERY generous. I would go for $2500 myself...

I was thinking that 2500 was about right, but i think he'll lose money at that.

Im thinking he gave $2600 in trade.

Well, an engine and turbo rebuild are what, $3k plus? Plus any other work the car needs. A fully running and good condition S5 TII should get $5k, not that car. Keep it under $3k, or you will be overpricing it, IMO.

non stock parts replacement on a rx7 is a definate negative point on the car. But what i would be worried about is the missing vin tag. (Call the police and find out what they would think if they pulled you over) It sounds like you could be in for some major hassles down the road. What was his reasoning for the missing vin tag? Sounds like its a bad deal man. Unless you can get him to 2500. But on the other hand they are hard to find......

Machine shop.

Just match the one on the frame.

Anyone else notice that the guage cluster looks like it's from an S4. If it's an S5, why the 7k redline? I'd pass and find a better one

Questions:
Are the seats right? Yes they are... if they aren't they could just be aftermarket ones, no biggie.

Is the idiot light cluster the right one with those square lighted indicators. I dunno about this one..

Is this the right steering wheel? Yeah, my friend's TII has that same one...

the stereo had the EQ in it, is that rare? Dunno about this one either, what is a EQ?

the exhaust might be original, is it? Can't tell by picture, but might be. I would think (correct me if I'm wrong) by looking underneathe, you can tell...

ABS on a turbo... rare?
All turbo cars have ABS. Only time the ABS was an option was on the GXLs, that I am aware of.

Looking at the trim, I'd say it's actually an S4.

With all those problems, I wouldn't bother.
Find a clean one.

I wouldn't take that car. There are plenty of cars out there in much better condition. If he was asking $5,400 he is obviously looking for a sucker. Don't be it. Smells too fishy. Just keep looking and be patient.

guess you've never been in ANY T2 before...all T2's have 7K redline...its def an S5 gauge cluster, an S4 has more squared off gauges

gotorx7: the trim is S5 as well...

Sniper: a little oil in the intercooler is normal, when it gets excessive then there's a problem. also, are those wheels off a convertible? although they are mesh, they don't seem like the stock 89-91 T2 ones...see if you can trade the BLING BLING chrome ones off the car in the background muhahaha

ok I looked at my dash lights and mine are not square, so that's odd. does it have a check engine light? if not it's an S4 cluster. however every single other thing points to S5, so above is wrong. auto belts, S5 radio surround, S5 door trim, hatch cover, tail lights, s5 round gauges, etc.

all turbos have a 7k redline.

This car is just messed, the interior seems to point to an S4, but the exterior right down to the door trim (on the S4's trim the impression is in the middle, on the S5's it's more towards the bottom of the trim and is more sloped) points to an S5.

Personally I would not buy that car, keep looking you'll find something better.

Cars definitely shady. It seems to be a 89-91 based on the fact it has mouse belts, im not sure if those can be retrofitted to an 86-88 (and who would want to ). And look at the stock stereo. Didnt all 89-91 have the CD player? I cant see one there. The idiot lights are from an 86-88 and Ive never seen that steering wheel in a TII before. Also I have no clue why the headlight switch doesnt seem to have the dash light dimmer on it.
Considering all this, I'd offer him maybe $2,000 for such a mess. How many miles were on it?

Yep that looks like an S4 cluster, aside from the missing check engine light cluster, shouldn't the fuel gauge be pointing Empty since the car has no battery? And with no battery, how did it you managed to start it( smooth idle, and lots of smoke was mentioned)?
This car is so shady that the transmission could be F%cked up, has prolly some very old S4 drivetrain and engine parts. Not to mention the body and parts corrosion on it. I'll STAY AWAY for sure. Or buy it for parts(even that's a gamble), $1300 MAX, had it not for the bbs rims and S5 tails.

The tach "goes up to" 8K...but they all redline at 7K...

Geoffman72: all 89-91 T2's had that same steering wheel in the US
