Megasquirt Is It Good

Let me know people about the MEGASQUIRT EFI... you think its worth getting it ??
Is it a plug and play system??

I have a 87 Mazda Rx7 T2

Like any other standalone ecu, it is not a plug and play system. They don't make those for the 2nd gen.

The MegaSquirt is a DIY system. You can pay someone to preassemble it but normally you would get a kit and solder the parts together yourself.

MegaSquirt does not do ignition but because it is a DIY system there are some people who have designed subassemblies that do ignition. There are several people who have put MegaSquirt on second generation Rx7's but I don't think anyone has quite succeded in completely duplicating Mazda's ignition. I think the best that has been done so far is running the trailing ignition in sync with the leading ignition instead of the factory timing.

At least one person is running MegaSquirt fuel only and letting the factory ECU do ignition.

It all depends how involved you want to get with your fuel injection.

I have a Megasquirt that I am in the assembly stages on. It is going on my GSL-SE though. It uses a distributer. I personally wouldn't use a Megasquirt with a stock 2nd gen ecu on the ignition. You are correct that it can't properly control ignition on a rotary. You could retrofit a distributer onto a 2nd gen and then convert it to direct fire. This would be pretty easy and really wouldn't suffer a noticable power loss this way only if you were using direct fire. A standard dizzy setup would lose power over the 2nd gen system. Even if it worked as good, the dizzy will still suffere in some areas compared to the 2nd gen ignition. You won't have timing control based on boost and economy may suffer. It depends on how you set it up.

If programmed for it, it can control only 1 coil with a distributer. It has the ability to advance and retard the timing this but even with a distributer, you still need 2 coils to run a rotary properly. We can't do the trailing this way and run a direct fire setup. Some think this is acceptable. I think this is crap. You can run a nondirect fire setup and run the leading and trailing plugs together and still get the megasquirt to control basic advance and retard. Too bad no timing split doesn't give you the most power like everyone says it does.

I've put a few together,,, I think it would work fine as an additional injector controller,

definately NOT plug and play... its like the poor poor man's version of a haltech

The ignition for the Megasquirt may never actually work for the Rotary. The ignition addons for the Megasquirt now work for some standard piston engines, but i does not (and possibly will not) support the split timing of the rotary.

You might be able to get it to work as firing 2 plugs at the same time, but that would not be good for power or for fuel efficency.

As of now, the Megaquirt is a fuel controller, nothing more.

There are a couple of guys running the leading and trailing together and controlling the spark by Megasquirt. They still aren't using a crank angle sensor. I really don't like this setup. Some people say that the trailing plugs don't do anything. Actually adjusting the leading/trailing split based on load/rpm is one of the secrets to getting more power out of a rotary through tuning. I only intend to run it as a fuel computer.

I don't see why anyone would want a plug and play ecu on their fc. These cars are now at least 15 years old, our wiring harnesses are crusty cluster *****. Running a new harness with whatever EMS you go with offers much more peace of mind IMHO.
