megasquirt goes in TOMORROW!

tomorrow I will be finalizing the construction of my megasquirt unit... I have everything done except the lid to my case ( I made my own case justforthehella'it) solder in the LED's and the fet's, and drill their respective holes. Then my MS needs to be wired up and tuned. anyone in the south GA area have a wide band they would like to loan I'll just run rich until I can come up with a solution to that problem.

some notes I would like to make for others planning on doing the MS.

A> making the case is a bitch. don't do it unless you really want to.

B> have your stuff organized ahead of time. It really helps.

C>I had to spend a long time dickering with my serial connection before I got it to work. I tried it on 3 different computers and I had no success till I got to the 3rd.

D> I got away without a stim (or so I think so far... my power circuit works, and the clock circuit works, and the serial connection works, but not sure about sensors except for MAP.(suck/blow))

I am installing toggle switches so that I can switch back to stock in case of emergency/ while tuning. Once I get comfortable with the reliability, I will remove it.

does anyone who has already done this know of a good place to stick the MS? I was thinking about putting it in place of the stock tape player. I figure it will not fit under the glovebox, and I don't want to mess up my glovebox, and so I don't want to put it in there either. Eventually I will put in my CD player ( in my old car now) so I will have an extra bay. In that place I plan to put the megaview.

well, I will post more tomorrow as I go along. renns, where can I get your .inc files? I know I can cook up my own, but if you already have them made up and posted somewhere, that would save me some time.

If I may ask, what was the final cost of the project (including sensors)? I am thinking of using the MegaSquirt for a 20B project.

Sorry if this has been answered already, but I could not locate anything via the search.

Could you take pics of the install?

Aaron- I am using stock sensors. The values are in the FSM and I will probably use easytherm (thanks renns!) and that will eliminate the need for GM sensors. I will eventually put a full range TPS on there, but for now I will stick with the stock S4 one. Will the S5 TPS drop in, or will I need to change some things around to get it to fit? the S5 TPS is full range, and I would think that to be a good replacement.

cost so far has been:
Partial kit: 50$
Digikey order: 46+s&h (5-6$)
straight through serial cable- 8$
sheet metal for case: 5$
nuts, bolts, rivets, etc: 5$
soldering iron, weller sp25: 50$, extra tips bumps to 75$(the iron is reusable though... it falls into the "new toys category )
60/40 spool of solder, .032 diameter, couple $$
toggle switches( emergency to switch back to stock ECU) 6$ apiece, 3 switches, double pull, double throw.

I am also remote mounting my LED's so I can stash away my MS. I am using some cat 5 cabling to do this.

I will try to take some pics, but no guarantees.

nonameo,

Glad to hear you are making progress! For the .inc files, just use the latest version of EasyTherm from the Yahoo site, and key in the values from the Mazda FSM. Keep in mind, though, that the bias resistors on the MS board are set up for the GM sensors. The Mazda coolant temp thermistor is in a similar range to the GM unit, so it's not an issue, but the air temp thermistor is of MUCH higher resistance. You should swap out the bias resistor for this input if you haven't already done so.

Actual bias resistor size is not critical, just pick one roughly midway through the resistance range of the sensor. The key step is to enter this new bias resistor value in EasyTherm so it can calculate and download the correct .inc files. If you'd rather I just send you my files, I can do that as well. Drop me a line at renns_99@yahoo.com.

If you are street-tuning the car, pick a time when traffic is light, and get out into the country if you can. Read up on the MSTweak software, get your system set up to run closed loop with lots of control authority, and datalog everything. A couple 10-minute runs with MSTweak in between should give you a decent base map.

What is your installation configuration? Turbo or n/a?, ignition type?, # and type of injectors?... I assume you are planning to run the dual table code to allow staged injection?

Aaron,

The cost to convert my '86 n/a was only the price of the kit, which was $100 US when I bought it. I already had material to make up a harness, and adapted a full-span TPS I found in my toolbox.

renns-- I did not have enough time to get it installed this weekend oh well. There's always next weekend. I used the FSM to enter in new values. When I told it ( easytherm) to upload dual table code, though, it would not make serial communication after reboot( I think I did something wrong here, I removed the boot jumper, though). I had to stop there, though, so I will mess with it some tomorrow. I will upload the standard code and see if that will work.

I am using the stock T2 configuration. I am doing the MS for fun, more or less. I really don't have enough done to my car to warrant it, but you know... YOU KNOW HOW IT IS!!!! just gotta have more toys to play with yes I am running dual table if I can get it to work.
