Well I got curious how well the mod would work in a S5. I had the night free and plenty of Sapphire, tonic water and limes...oh and a spare S5 N/A cluster. Actually the work thus far isn't so involved at all....but I never pass up a valid reason to mix gin and tonics with leisure time.

The problem that has been eluded to previously is that the 4 OEM gauges are connected in pairs. Fuel/Temp and Pressure/Volt. There is clear plastic on the back of the gauges that helps carry the light from the bulbs. So presumably if you are able to cut the gauge pairs the ones you want to keep may not illuminate anymore.

My problem, if I did this mod is that I wanted to keep my fuel and volt gauges. If illumination were the only issue it looks like I could simply cut off the gauges I don't want. The potential problems are whether the gauges will physically fit. Depth of the gauges might be a problem as well as diameter behind the bezel I'll try to get some pics posted tomorrow.

This would solve all my problems. I've wanted to stay away from cluttering up the dash/pillars with gauges.. and this should work for me.

Thanks for the idea.

I've been shopping for replacement gauges for quite a while, ever since my Nordskog EGT took a dump and could not be healed. I just ordered a pair of their Premium guages as replacements. Finding a code for a 10% discount helped as well. Google can be a wonderful thing............

Too bad their EVO gauges don't come in Amber as they were my first choice otherwise.

Oh man you must be using a electrical style gauge. Get a mechanical one. You will go threw so many sensors. IDK what kind of gauge it is, went threw 6 sensors on a talon before realizing nothings going to change, get mechanical.

I am selling the premium series (52mm) oil psi and coolant temp gauges I originally bought (before I realized how much a pain in the *** an aftermarket fuel level gauge would be). Now that I have my modified custer w/ 45mm gauges I have no use for the larger gauges...shame, since they were never even installed.

Wannafd:
That sounds like a dsm problem...or an install problem.

Sorry I've been absent for awhile guys.

If you don't mind Sharingan I'll post a quick writeup on how to do this mod for the S5 on your thread.

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/writeup-jspec-gauge-cluster-938512/

It worked awesome for me even though I made a few mistakes. I'll gladly share them so that other people won't have to go through a couple gauge clusters each >_<

@JustJeff You have to cut the stock gauge in half, use a dremel and be careful. And yes some backing material from the cluster will also need to be removed.

^looks good Bomber

It's reassuring to see that cutting the OEM gauges doesn't affect the illumination.

Were you able to fit the clear cover back over the cluster? Or did the 45mm gauges extend out too far?

For the time being I'm not going to be doing the mod. I bought Sharingan's 52mm pressure gauge and I'll use that along with my 52mm water and oil temp gauges.

I may have larger projects this summer..painting two verts and possibly putting two tops on also.

@JustJeff I did get the clear cover to fit over the Prosport bezels, barely. There are backlights and forelights, I sacrificed one of the forelights to run the cables through, but it didn't matter since it was below the prosports and would have looked weird illuminating their bezels. And repainting 2 verts... o.O Good luck with that. I've got my hands full taking care of paint chips, but I suck @ bodywork

@Sharingan Thanks! My cluster and yours are the same in that you can't relocate any gauges since the signal for the fuel gauge goes through the screws that mount it to the cluster body and the circuit board behind it. If you could, relocating the gauge would amusingly cause it to fluctuate like the gauge that was originally there.

I've got two friends who both know paint and bodywork. Both are willing to teach me, all I need to do is pay for the materials and give them a little for their efforts. I've always had a pretty good hand at such things, just never taken on anything of this size.

+ eleventy billion again for Prosport....

My gauges were stolen a couple weeks back, jerks just ripped them right out of the console.... hell they took the console with them! After getting the car back on the road and some advice from Hozzman I talked to Prosport about getting them replaced. They are expediting me 3 new units and gave me a very nice and wholly unexpected discount for them. Best customer service ever!

Prosport would have you covered for everything but fuel level. Hence why Sharingan (and later me) modded the stock cluster; this way gauge pods are a non-issue and you don't have to find a non-existent aftermarket fuel level gauge.
