Me so happy. Thanks HAILERS and ihumplegs.

I drove my 10AE to work today for the first time in about 5 months. I got the AFM via UPS yesterday and threw it on, charged the battery and she's running like a champ. I gave her a well deserved bath, and put a "got rice" sticker on the back just for good measure.

I think you asked why the afm killed spark. My guess is something called REF VOLTAGE was being killed by a short in the afm or at least the 5vdc ref voltage was being pulled down considerably. It seems the ECU uses the ref voltage to make spark and work the fuel injectors plus quite a few other functions.

I used to be a disbeliever in the afm being the culprit, but after reading so many threads where it was indeed the problem, I became a True Believer.

I have no idea what's wrong with your car. Sorry. With mine, I was driving home from work when it just died. I came to a stop light and it wasn't running anymore. I just had no spark, not intermittent spark, no spark at all. I took it to a shop and they said that the computer was fried and they couldn't get one for these cars. So I bought a computer from someone on this fourm and was all excited to hear my car run, and it did the same thing, so after some trouble shooting and checking continuity on my harness and checking that I was infact getting fuel, Hailers suggested that I do the simplest thing and unplug my AFM as others had done, and viola, the car started and ran really crappy, but it worked, so $35 later and about 4 months of frustration, my car is running again. Now there's a slight idle problem that wasn't there before, but things happen when you let a car sit for 4 months, so I'll have to troubleshoot that now.
