Just as an FYI...89-90 GTU is the worst RX7. No LSD, no beefy suspension..it's..blah.

i think the 86 base model takes the cake in the 'worst rx7' category. no LSD, no beefy suspension, no 160hp S5 motor...

the only difference is the brakes rear end and suspension. and luxury ****.
those are normally the first things I mod anyways.
and it wheighs abit less than the gxl be-ing a base model.
so I guess the gtu is just fine if you plane to upgrade/ mod it.

Hmm. You're right. 89-90 GTU takes a very close second. Goods : engine, and body.

Nobody said anything about Auto-x. And the 86 sport can be made to weigh the same or less, and own the base...

Hmm... I thought one of the pourposes of the GTU was to have no luxury items. I don't think any were made with power windows, leather, or cruise control. I've been in a GTU and a GTUs and noticed that if you look at the door, they don't have map pockets.
Sorry if I go off topic but I've always had questions about GTU series 7's.
It says in the catalog for Victoria British that the GTU became the base model in 1989. Is that true?
I've heard that the GTU has an upgraded suspension. And the GTUs has the suspension from a turbo. So would I be correct in understanding that 7's left the factory (depending on year) with a suspension that was either base, above base (GTU), or turbo (turbo II, or GTUs)?
I remember a friend of my mom wanting to sell me an 88 GTU with a running engine, but shot tranny for $500. I passed up on it because it was in TERRIBLE condition, had a ricer exhaust, and would need a complete interior swap.

^ I drove one... OMG! That was the coolest 7 I have ever been in. Plus it helped that the guy had an RB exhust on it. It's inspired me in tuning my 7.

The GTUs is overrated. Have you ever driven an '88 GTU? It takes the cake...

like I said the difference is ( read my first post )
suspension, brakes, rear end, and LUXURY ****.
IE: power windows, door pockets , material used on the doors , cruise control.
get it now?

and dealers can add alot of bullshit to the car.
it is verry common to see gtu's or SE's with dealer installed moonroof.
My car had dealer installed cruise, it was ay and I ripped it out.

if you plan to actually mod your car
gtu > gxl
IMHO
gxl has too much un-needed heavy BS.

Yea whats with this talk about a GTU being bad they dont have any of the unnessecary weight. The only thing as far as accessories that the GTUs doesn't have is a sunroof.
Who cares about suspension cause if your going to Auto-x, drift, or road race you'll have to upgrade to an aftermarket suspension anyways. The vlsd in the GTUs isn't as fun as the clutch types. I have a GTU that's basically like a GTUs and love it.
-I got a GXL rear end, T2 steering rack, and no power junk except the sunroof.
