Mazda Reman core ?'s

hi,

next summer i am planing on doing some major overhauling on my 87 (s4) TII, most importantly with a mazda reman'd core. i was wondering wether i should/can order a s4 core or if i should just order a s5 core and wether or not it would work corectly (i dont know if the s4 and s5 cores are the same). and i would also like to know what the adverge mazda core costs so i can get an idea how much i need to put away. thanks in advance.

PS also check out my other thead "strange starting/idleing issues". i havent had much response so any help there would be aprectiated also.

Mazda remans are around 2600 w/exchange, or plus $1000 if you do not have a core to give them. You are supposed to give them the same thing you get, however it's unlikely a dealership will be able to tell the difference between an s4 and s5 block.

would i get any preformance gain from the higher comp? would this help the car last longer (engine) with the higher comp? i am only going to be running 15psi at the max because its gonna be a 93octain machine.

It won't really make much of a difference power wise...the s5 motor might make a few more hp (1-5 on a scale of 2-300) and get a couple mpg better due to the higher compression. The main thing in my mind would be the castings on the irons...the s5 reman engines should probably come with the larger rear iron casting, while I kinda doubt an s4 reman would.

I've talked to a guy from Speed Machine Performance (they sell mazda remans) and he said that he hasn't seen a single part reused from a core in over 2 years, everything is new. Flywheel, waterpump, housings, rotors, everything. So you're getting a brand new engine basically. But they still require a core for some reason.

Bullshit. See some of the FD section threads on remans (those guys go through them) and/or the pineapple racing "engine building thoughts" section for more educated opinions on remans.

So does Mazda have one specific place that does remans? Or are they done by Mazda dealers? If dealers do them... **** that.

They are done by a subcontracter for mazda, reusing all parts possible.

here's a link to the latest reman thread in the FD section, have a read:

From what I have seen, you will get new housings and rotors a lot of the time, but the rest is a crap shoot. They seem to be notorious for awful rotor bearings.

My 87 TII has a reman with 500 miles. Bought it that way. The paperwork says reman.I have low oil pressure and I notice lots of white sealant around the oil pan. I think they used to much sealant on everything. I am currently tearing the motor out to inspect.

I think we're fighting a losing battle here...

I think you get the warranty only if you pay the dealer to do the install...about 1500 bucks.

Casting changes are discussed here, and would not affect installation: http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/2n...ron_break.html

I'm gonna email that guy at Speed Machine with a link to one of the reman threads and see what he says.
