Max Mileage of a 87 RX7 non-turbo?

Edit- its an 88 not a 87 typo.
I was wondering about how many miles you can get out of a stock 1988 non-turbo RX7. I have a 1988 Rx7 Convertable that has 100,000 miles on the original engine and somone told me that these rotery engines have to be rebuilt about every 100,000 miles. Is this true?

So if a non turbo Rx7 is well taken care of and not beat on. What should I expect?

expect what ever gas mileage you want. it differs depending how you drive. i say you can get a good 22mpg.

why dont you drive it and see how good your mileage is.


and an engine doesnt need to be rebuilt unless its broken, correct. you should compression test it. members on here have NA's with over 200k. so that guy is a douche who doesnt know **** about ****.

i have seen some let got a 130k and some at 200k it all depends on who drives it, and how its ben driven, stored for long or not, maintenance done to it. it all depends, as for random ppl telling they only last 100k they dont know what there talking, i add those ppl to the "ya they quit making those cars cause they blow head gaskets all the time" list.

honestly, it depends how the driver drives the car, beater, break faster, DD and just need to get to where you need to go, should be more reliable.

I was told by an RX-7 expert who has several dozen junkyard cars that the NA is good for about 150,000 and the turbos (no specific generation mentioned) only about 50,000 when it comes to the cars in his yard. The turbos are a different story because of modfications bring down the life of an engine that won't last as long as the NA in the first place. Some have done well with the turbos lasting but most don't and that is where the 50,000 comes from. Back no topic with the NA engine again. My '91 NA has 115,000 miles on it but the oil rings leak and cause smoke at high revs. This requires a rebuild to fix but the motor still runs despite the issue, so you decide.

This question is in the FAQ's so let me scold you gently before someone else does. Read the FAQ's at the top of this 2nd gen forums. here is the section on mileage.

How long does a rotary engine run? Do I need to rebuild my engine?
Most 13Bs can last over 150-200K miles, while most 13BT engines usually last 125-175K miles, but remember that regular proper maintenance for the engines entire life is required for higher lifespan.

sorry this thread made me upset.

I guess I might have worded this wrong. I was not asking the gas mileage of my car. I was only asking how many miles these cars can go on the life of the engine. If I wanted to know my gas mileage I would just see how many miles I can go on a full tank & devide that by the number of gallons I need when I refill. I know this. I wouldn't come on here and ask. Also obvesouly I would not rebuild an engine if it was not broken, that would be retarded. I was told that these engines only go that many miles and then die. I think there was a misunderstanding.

500K that sounds about right..

hell I had a subaru with over 800K original miles.. why cant a rotary..

my 90 vert is at 165k and it feels fine. the previous owner for 17 years did all the matinence at a mazda dealer religiously

Premix and it will last longer. Ive got almost 200,000 on mine and it has original engine. Keep the oil changed!!!!

Wow, very nice Airceo13, I'm glad to see someone getting some decent miles out of these things. I can't seem to put down more than 4000 miles on an engine before they pop... :\ But mainly it seems to be little things like bad vac hoses and what not. ..... You might be getting some decent miles on your cars because you don't have the, "Drive it like you stole it!" logo stitched into your steering wheel? haha

depends on how the car is maintained. I checked the compression on my '87 at ~185k miles and it had between 110-120 psi on both rotors. For comparison, after I bought the '91 at 120k miles, the motor had about 85 psi on both rotors. Both cars are still running their original motors, it really depends on the driving style and how they are maintained.

i sold my na and it had 156k miles
still runs great...

my t2 has a motor in it that has ~150k... still hot/cold start and runs great...

I've had a mechanic tell me that he gets customers with bad engines at about 160,000 miles. Next year he told me 170,000 miles. Of course those don't include the engines that never see a mechanic for a rebuild or those that are still going. A buyer's guide mentioned that over 200,000 and still going strong is possible with proper maintenance. One member of the forum had his engine go to 300,000 miles or so via all the basic maintenance, repairing anything that breaks, and annual coolant changes (rather than the recommended 1 per 3 years). His oil changes were every 5k w/ whatever API certified dino oil was on sale. That's still more often than the Mazda recommended 7.5K. He didn't do anything special to his car at all other than rigorous maintenance. i.e., ALL the maintenance items listed in the Haynes manual / owner's manual; not to be confused with repairs, which he also did. The thing that finally killed his engine was an incompatible antifreeze that ate through his radiator and overheated his engine in about a week. GM Dextron was the antifreeze, I think.

its kind of funny GM dexcool = GM product so its made for GM, im sry thats just to funny, i feel bad for some ppl that mix green to top up there dexcool lets make some math.
Green + orange = brown jello in your engine, i see it lots in the shops i work at, plugs up coolant passages ect. but ya back to the subject

REGULAR MAINTENANCE!!! is the key that and not installing drive it like you stole it stickers :P

but my n/a lasted 216miles and ran a 15.82 1/4 mile that was a stock 12A mind you, and it sat for 3 years the i bet it up some
but i premixed and oil pumped it since day one just in case so who know, mind you the guy that perched my engine sent me pics of the housing flaking off, but it ran a 15.82 like that with the clutch worn to the rivets.

or could engine life just be a fluke thing, who relay knows,
i keep telling my self if i build a 500hp rotary T2 il expect to rebuild each 3 years then you know its coming, but its just part of the fun. sry for all the ppl that will be mad at my spelling and grammer BS

My S4 has 167k and great compression... My brother had a s4 with over 220k before it started to die. I had a 12a FB that went 220 on the origional 12a before it died.

My old S4 turbo was still kicking with a lot of mods at about 175k miles original motor. The motor must have been built on a wednesday and the transmission on a sunday morning; that thing was beat. Supposedly the engine still ran after the rear end exploded and took out half the rear subframe.

My NA on my last car blew around 140K. Though with proper maintenance and a properly functioning mop you should get to 200k.
