Massive oil leak, cannot locate

For the past couple of weeks i've noticed i get an oil burning smell every so often. Mainly while cruising on the highway for 30-40 min. I have NOT noticed any extra oil consumtion from the motor (i check oil at every gas fill) and that all seems normal.

I did an oil change over the weekend and when i was under the car, the entire rear, transmission case, mufflers, bonez race pipe (causeing burning oil smell) are all covered in oil. It seems to be coming from inbetween the transmission bell housing and the rear side housing. (where they bolt together).

Like i said oil consumtion from the motor is normal. I fear that the transmission front main seal might have gone out (the trans has alittle over 230,ooo miles on it)

Let me know what you all think it may be.

Check your oil filter pedistal. There are two o-rings under there that have a nasty habit of letting out small quantities of oil after 15+ years of service. It will get some oil in that general area.

Otherwise, break out the simple green, start cleaning, and look for signs of new leakage.

If you said that "It seems to be coming from inbetween the transmission bell housing and the rear side housing" try taking out the rubber plug found under the Transmission to see If you've got a leak at the Front Transmission Seal. The plugs sole purpose there Is just to check that you are or not leaking from the seal.

Does you Clutch feel different?

I made the extra effort to replace both Front/Rear Seal at the Transmission, at the time of my TII conversion. Just cheap assurance, I guess.

well. that's another thing. That large black rubber plug is NOT in place. and there is oil seeping from there. and yes the clutch has been feeling little different lately, and is also makeing a strange noise.

I fear driving the car if infact the trans oil is leaking because once that sucker goes dry she's definatly toast right? I would imagin that its the trans front seal. hell the poor thing has seen plenty of miles. 3rd gear is nearly gone, 1st and 2nd are louder than my exhaust note. i guess after 230.000 miles my trans "deserves" to be rebuilt...

The seal needs to be replaced (probably the Tranny aswell, based on your symptoms) but I'd worry about saving your Clutch now. It's probably been contaminated due to oil making It's way there. Too bad.

That happened to mine. When it go dry, it all goes downhill pretty quick. It squeeled for a week until it sheared the countershaft input gear, leaving me with a trans that only worked in 4th.

I guess It's safe to say the $7 can spent on replacing these Seals are worth the effort? I even did It when I dropped my Tranny on my NA when I Installed the ACT Clutch/Racing Beat Flywheel.
