does manual transmission oil smell sweet? the reason i ask is that all 3 of my rubber boots on my shifter are torn and a little bit of oil has come through. it smells inside my car, a little sweet with a hint of burnt clutch. i'm not sure if that is the cause of the smell or not. i just bought the car a week ago and the smell has been there since i bought it.

i checked my carpets under the dash and there is no sign of coolant leaking from the heater core so i'm pretty sure it's not that.

 

It could have some synthetic stuff in there that could smell that way. I wouldn't think it was 90wt. cause that stuff stinks.

The burnt clutch smell isn't good though. Or are you just hard on it?

 

tranny fluid, used, stinks pretty rank.

 

no i'm not hard on it. i suppose i could just replace all the oil in the tranny when i get new shifter bushings and boots... then see what happens

 

The boots alone should cut out all that smell from the interior. Although clutch is pretty distinctive and it's pretty easy to smell anyway.

 

even sythetic gear oil smells like ***.....that stuff is nasty ****......
