My freind just bought an 88 rx-7 turbo II and he wants to make the whoosh with the stock bov. We tried to disconnect it from the air box but, it acts like a vacuum leak and does not idle well. So I came up with the idea of putting a fish tank check valve on the vacuum line going to the bov to keep the vacuum from pulling the bov open but it did not seem like the bov blew off correcly although it did idle well. I have searched and all I could come up with was a very large check valve on the outlet side of the bov but, there has got to be a better way of doing this.

I did something similar on my first FC... take the bov and rotate it upwards towards the hood. Secure a one-way valve that will seal securely to it. Plug the hole where the bov went into the intake piping. Almost anything will work. I used stuff from home depot. It's a good alternative to spending the money for an aftermarket bov since all you want is the sound and not performance. If your buddy is utilizing a stock boost setup, this will work fine. More boost will most likely break it and the vacuum leak will leave your car idling poorly or stalling.

 

If you REALLY want to do this, you need to jack the idle up over 1,000RPM.
This will prevent the slight leak from killing the motor while idling.

Just pull off the hose off the front end of the BOV (that goes back into the air box), and go blasting around at your hearts content...

It gets old after a while.

it hasn't got old for me yet, and it's been like a year and a half



what you need to do is this:

go to the plumbing dept. in your local hardware store (home depot works well!)

get the following in 1/2" galvanized or brass:

1 plug
1 1/2" threaded nipple (about 2" long at most)
1 1/2" tee valve (I'm sure they're not 100% airtight but they seem to work well enough)
and you also need about 3" of 1/2" inside diamater flexible hose.

attach the hose to the nipple, and the nipple to the tee valve, and put the plug in the whole in the S pipe.

note: the more boost you run, the louder it gets.. at 5.5 psi it's not going to be that loud, but when you're running 8-10PSI its CRAZY LOUD.

The sound has never gotten old to me either.

Granted I have a "real" BOV @ run 15psi. Sounds amazing.

hey u know what? Do what my FC did.

slightly unhook the top mount intercooler and unhook that rubber piping....

trust me, it will make that WHOOSH sound u want...i was so happy when it made that sound... thought I had a nice BOV... (don't ask me how i know..... AND YES it did idle well....)

anyways, i've read online where they did an open vent BOV modded from the stock Air Bypass valve, so go search around =)

 

Doesn't seem worth doing overall. Why not go with the stealth of not making the noise and have it when you actually buy a BOV?

That or do the other thing, up to your friend though.

If you want to intimidate them just make the car fast. Who cares about it sounding louder or more like a turbo or making the "whoooooosh" sound? Intimidating is flying past them like they're standing still.

we have a right to our own opinion don't we? I'm going to do something like this to my turbo II after I finish the clutch job this week. I think it sounds pretty cool, not too ricey at all. Most ricers don't even have a turbo to put a blow off valve on, stop hating.

 

sorry...you're on the wrong forum if you're looking for non-haters. If it's something that people here hate, it's rice. Or even worse, rice that makes your car run slower.

 

That doesn't mean your oppinion isn't stupid to most of the forum. A lot of people hate back at me. Do I care? no. It remains an unfunctional mod. Its part of the "look at me" aka rice movement. I night thee ricer X! lol its your car but you are subject to the feedback of the rest of the forum.

 

Not to scary since you can buy that woosh-sound making thing off eBay for your exhaust.
