that's a nice plan, but it includes adding a switch to the car, ruining the OEM look = )

why not find the wire that is sent from the headlight switch which raises the lamp housings and just cut it? then the headlight switch would turn the lamps on and off, and the knob above it would be used to raise and lower the housings.

You're right. Despite what some people think, they're not city lights or daytime running lights or anything like that, they're simply front marker lights. US cars have them integrated into the indicators instead.

To me the ability to flash your high-beams is far more important that having a pair of basically decorative lights instead. Personally I don't even like the JDM "FTP" lights, as they have a very weak, diffused look, even with a brighter bulb.

It's very easy to hide a switch, but I wouldn't even bother with one. As suggested, use an ignition switched relay to turn the headlights on for use as DRL's. The headlight switch is then used to raise them at night and turn on the taillights.

Because that's twice an many actions as there needs to be, and besides, cutting the wire would also diasble that switch. Aaron's method (with a relay) is far more elegant.

I did a pretty sweet FTP light project. I figured no one cared about it, and I got about half way through a write-up when I quit.

If anyone wants me to finish the writeup, let me know:

They look good, and they filled in the dark spot between the headlights and fog lights. :)

Yeah i did the same thing it looks like was done above... using a set of fog lights perchased from walmart with surprising results... I of course used a factory switch though...

Travelintrevor 06-19-04 06:25 PM

man...i will post some pics tomorrow on this thread and start a newone...a real easy project with the FTP's and looks sweet

SirRX7 06-19-04 06:44 PM

RyoFC3S, those look great!! Can you please post a pic of the FTPs turned on but with the headlights off? I'd like to see how bright they are without the headlights.

RyoFC3S 06-20-04 02:38 AM

My digital camera sucks.. It doesen't show how much light they actually put out. I'd say they're about as bright as the fog lights- if your headlights weren't working i'm sure they would work as an emergency solution.

Picture. Excuse the size.

I'll try to get better pictures later.

I'd like a writeup!

86GXL 06-24-04 11:45 AM

Daytime pics? i'd like to see how they look inside there without the light on

Madrx7racer 06-24-04 01:22 PM

I was thinkg about doing that.....but I wanted yo use some fog lights.....I think it would get too hot in there and melt something tho.

NA2TurboProject 06-24-04 01:50 PM

A kewl trick to get your lights clear again. Take some slightly abbrasive metal polish and a die grinder and polish the outside lenses. Just be carful not to burn them.

RyoFC3S 06-24-04 05:50 PM

I just finished the writeup. I just need to do a couple of things to get it working right, but expect it by tonight or tomorrow morning. :)

Oh yea, this is for that light comparison you were asking for:

yeah, i just wired in a momentary switch in the headlight-up wire so i can turn my lights on without them going up. and whenever i want them up, just hold the button till they're all the way up. or, if you like the sleepy eye look, hold the momentary switch until they are where you want them. very simple. and the switch is located at the inside top left of the instrument cluster housing. hardly visible.

87base RX-7 06-24-04 08:30 PM

-fstrnou- wait exactly where did u wire this switch in at? cause that sounds like what id like too cause of the sleepy eyed option thanks

RyoFC3S 06-25-04 02:21 AM

Alright, its totally done. Now, I just need someone to host it, because the site I normally use to host things won't allow it.

Anyone want to host it?

RyoFC3S 06-25-04 04:10 AM

I can send you the file via email, I think. Message me on AIM or MSN if you can. RedSunID for AIM and RedSunID@hotmail.com for MSN. I won't be on until tomorrow afternoon, though.

i think you wire that switch to the red/blue stripe wire coming from headlight controller switch. i can't remember. check the FSM wiring diagrams.
