Making Jspec FTPs, the cheap way
I was wondering if there is a way to "make" Jspec FTP lights. Anyone have any pictures or ideas on how to do it?
i was thinking about stripping the Parking Lamp wires and connecting driving lamps to make them shine thru the FTPs But i was wondering if there was a way to "CLEANLY" mod the FTPs so that the lights sit tightly behind them and they look cool ^_^ Anyone have any ideas? I've look through the form, I saw the day time headlight conversion, but wouldn't routing the parking lamp wires be much simpler? |
Just because your FTP lenses light up doesn't mean they look like the JDM FTP lenses.
|
I honestly do not see the purpose for these other than aesthetics. I mean is it really that important for your car to have light up FTP lenses? Or is just that you want your car to look like you got it imported from Japan? :p:
|
i mean, during the day, it's not like people can REALLY see u flash your high beams..... rather than having 2 useless pieces of plastic there.... why not make them "LOOK" useful (note: i put LOOK in quotes) ^_^
|
Drill a hole in the back.. Toss a light in..
JDM TYTE! |

People can see mine too.
People may choose to ignore them (like turn signals) but hey, thats what the car is biult to deal with. |
Daytime running lights are the way to go
Just wire the fogs as DRL - (see avatar)
I have seen several drivers (and 1 deer) start to pull out in my path then stop when they see the 55 watt running lights. |
Or buy my JDM FtP's that I have...
|
Well, i don't plan to spend 160 on Jspec FTPs. heck, i might just take them out and make u HOLES! =P
|
Ya I always planned on doing the same thing. Possibly even modding them enough to use them as headlights if I wanted. How hard is it to get the FTPs apart cleanly?
|
The pattern on the outside of the JDM FTP's is also way different than the US versions. I got mine for about $75 bucks shipped and they came nicely wrapped in Mazda boxes (not knock offs hehe).

Exactly...at dusk they happen to look pretty cool with the dims on. I took out the standard wedge bulb from the japanses FTP's and tossed in a raybrig yellow wedge bulb. At dusk/night they look really nice with my HID's. The standard bulb color just looked wrong and I didn't wany anything "blue" hehe The yellow almost gives that Lexus look at night.

Another way: http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/lights.htm

Exactly! just for that 30 minutes at Dusk....... but for that 30 minutes each day, i don't think i want to spend over 100 dollars on a pair of lights...... Like me, living in the Bay Area, where everyone on the freeway have retarded ricer mobiles..... when you have a RX-7, that just shuts them up.... so making something custom is always a good thing =) u know, when those Integra GSR's think they can pass u........ then u beat them "at their own game" boy do they look like idiots...... ^_^ (i know, i think everyone on this forum SHOULD be elitists=) |
Cyblaster:
Text signatures can have 10 lines max, can you please revise yours. You have like 25. |
^_^ sorry =)
its fixed now |
I guess you can't count...but its better than before :p:
|
There =P
1,2,4,6,5,8, yeah yeah =P i passed pre-school! Honest! ^_^ fixed it.... sheesh... |
Thank you ;)

I'm using a 18 watt bulb so its actualy much much brighter than the 5 watt ... not good enough for Daytime lights but they look cool at night.

I think I'd use 2 bulbs in each or something. Does the light come through very well or no? Like can it light the road up at all? |
if you can see the bulb like that... the light is going through just fine. But light up the road??? that's a big hell no. there's no way a lil 5watt bulb like that can light up anything more than 1ft away from the car
|
why not find the wire that is sent from the headlight switch which raises the lamp housings and just cut it? then the headlight switch would turn the lamps on and off, and the knob above it would be used to raise and lower the housings. |
Originally posted by Rxmfn7 The J-spec FTPs seem worthless to me. They are not flass-to-pass anymore, just more of a running light. To me the ability to flash your high-beams is far more important that having a pair of basically decorative lights instead. Personally I don't even like the JDM "FTP" lights, as they have a very weak, diffused look, even with a brighter bulb. Originally posted by tie pilot that's a nice plan, but it includes adding a switch to the car, ruining the OEM look why not find the wire that is sent from the headlight switch which raises the lamp housings and just cut it? then the headlight switch would turn the lamps on and off, and the knob above it would be used to raise and lower the housings. |
I did a pretty sweet FTP light project. I figured no one cared about it, and I got about half way through a write-up when I quit.
If anyone wants me to finish the writeup, let me know: http://www.smempire.org/staff/ryosuke/ftp_light1.jpg http://www.smempire.org/staff/ryosuke/ftp_light2.jpg They look good, and they filled in the dark spot between the headlights and fog lights. :) -Andrew 90 TII |
Yeah i did the same thing it looks like was done above... using a set of fog lights perchased from walmart with surprising results... I of course used a factory switch though...

its a 921 style 18watt bulb.. lights up a little... but not enough to light up the road
|

man...i will post some pics tomorrow on this thread and start a newone...a real easy project with the FTP's and looks sweet
|
RyoFC3S, those look great!! Can you please post a pic of the FTPs turned on but with the headlights off? I'd like to see how bright they are without the headlights.
|
My digital camera sucks.. It doesen't show how much light they actually put out. I'd say they're about as bright as the fog lights- if your headlights weren't working i'm sure they would work as an emergency solution.
Picture. Excuse the size. I'll try to get better pictures later. -Andrew 90 TII |
I'd like a writeup!
|
Daytime pics? i'd like to see how they look inside there without the light on
|
I was thinkg about doing that.....but I wanted yo use some fog lights.....I think it would get too hot in there and melt something tho.
|
A kewl trick to get your lights clear again. Take some slightly abbrasive metal polish and a die grinder and polish the outside lenses. Just be carful not to burn them.
|
I just finished the writeup. I just need to do a couple of things to get it working right, but expect it by tonight or tomorrow morning. :)
Oh yea, this is for that light comparison you were asking for: http://www.smempire.org/staff/ryosuke/light.jpg :D -Andrew 90 TII |
would love a write up i like the way they look and wouldnt mind doing that to my TII....

yeah, i just wired in a momentary switch in the headlight-up wire so i can turn my lights on without them going up. and whenever i want them up, just hold the button till they're all the way up. or, if you like the sleepy eye look, hold the momentary switch until they are where you want them. very simple. and the switch is located at the inside top left of the instrument cluster housing. hardly visible.
|
-fstrnou- wait exactly where did u wire this switch in at? cause that sounds like what id like too cause of the sleepy eyed option thanks
|
Alright, its totally done. Now, I just need someone to host it, because the site I normally use to host things won't allow it.
Anyone want to host it? -Andrew 90 TII |
how large is it? i can probably host it.
|
3.5MB :o: (Lots of pictures)
-Andrew 90 TII |
i think i have just enough webspace. how would we go about doing this?
|
I can send you the file via email, I think. Message me on AIM or MSN if you can. RedSunID for AIM and RedSunID@hotmail.com for MSN. I won't be on until tomorrow afternoon, though.
