Major Fug up, need advice (clutch bolt)

Well, stripped a clutch bolt badly, easy out, impact wrench, vise grips.... nothing would work. So, i had to drill it, well 3/4 of the way through the drill bit snapped off in the hole. What now? Idea's please.

Thanks all,

-Robert

I will attached a pic if it will let me.

Ted, you got a TIG welder in your garage? I'm jealous

Rpeck, you talking pressure plate bolt? Only thing I can think of is maybe start die-grinding the head down in hopes of loosening up the drill bit sooner or later, then moving up to a larger easy-out.

Are you talking stripped, as in it's all the way down, but just spins either way?

why am i so confused by that picture? is that the transmission bellhousing?

also, you're talking about the bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel right?

Ya the bolts the hold the PP to the whywheel, the bolts the circle the clutch and PP. It is a top secret clutch design so it looks a little odd maybe.

LOL, the secret's out now!

I can't see anything resembling a broken drill bit down in the hole either, but I'm half-blind, j/k, gettin' old...

Is there enough room to get a larger easy-out in the hole before it bottoms out on the drill bit? If so,, get that sucker started good & yank & turn with some vice grips (how tight is the bolt in there?)

No, I was lubing the bit... it got to the end and caught a tear in the metal ... twist..snap.

That's my problem I am not sure how much room is on the other side, I dont want that drillbit to start twisting into the motor. I did finally manage to get the clutch off though, now I just have to figure out how to get the rest of the drillbit out of the flywheel. I gave up for tonight.

what do you guys think about a titanium, or carbide drillbit and drill through the stuck standard bit?

thanks,

Robert

That's going to be a PITA unless you've got a nice center-punched hole on that sucker to keep the new bit from wandering (which will just create more havoc for the flywheel).

Do the bolt holes go all the through the flywheel? I can't remember...That would be great if you could get to it from the "backside"...

You could drill another hole in the vicinity of the "bad" one, and use a helicoil, and make a "new" hole in the pressure plate, but I don't know if that would mess with your balance or not...

Take the top-secret flywheel out; remove in under the cover of darkness to an undisclosed location. Remove the PP and grip the biache with something and spin it out. Make sure that you handle any one that witnesses this activity and disavow any knowledge of your actions.

LOL, funny **** No, i said that cause it is really the clutch and pressure plate from my BMW K1100RS motorcycle. I didn't want one of the high strung mods moving the post to a low traffic area until after I had the problem fixed I brought the post to the 7 forum cause most of the BMW motorcycle owners in the world don't know what a socket set is .. much less do this kind of work. Plus at this point the question was more general fug up related than it was BMW related.

I think I have a cure now, I got the flywheel off, I will keep you all posted tomorrow .. thanks for the input.

I was going to say, that is neither an automobile clutch nor a rotary block...

lol.

Did the bit penetrate the other side before it broke? If so, I'd take a punch and push it out the other side.
