Main fuse getting really hot!

While driving a 88 TII the car shut off and the tach immediately spiked to 7k but the motor did not. I noticed the MAIN fuse for the engine (30a) was getting very very hot. The car will start periodical but runs like a pig and eventually shuts off. Any suggestions what might be going on here? Thanks in advanced!

The MAIN fuse should be 80a.
