The best thing to do is to throw the stock AFM in the trash and install a standalone EMS.

You would need to find a suitably compatible airflow meter. It would have to be either a moving-vane or sliding-cone type (NOT hot-wire), it's potentiometer would have to have a similar range of values, and you would need to use an S-AFC or similar to remap it's output so that the mixtures weren't all screwed up. Obviously it would need to be quite a big bigger than stock to make it worthwhile. It doesn't have to be a Mazda one, since they all work similarly.

The S-AFC is important because a bigger AFM is going to be sending very inaccurate signals to the ECU. I've read an article where a guy swapped an FC AFM onto a 1.6L Miata and the result was dangerously lean mixtures so he took it off. I'd only bother with this idea if you can afford the S-AFC but can't stretch to a programmable EMS.

Many months ago Dave from www.fc3s.org was going to try this with the larger sliding-cone AFM from a JC Cosmo, but he never posted any results.

You should sell those solenoids to people like me that have broken ones, not throw them away!

I know that people swap S4 TII AFM's onto 2nd gen escorts.. which would lead me to believe that the 323 is similar as well.. but those are smaller than ours, not bigger.

Anyone know about the 929?

I was refering to those of us who live in the "DEQ areas". Don't worry, if you dont' have testing in your area yet, wait until people move there, it will happen soon enough. Just not too long ago you had to test everything '73 and later... now its '74. At least we don't have to do the visual like the CA guys do...
