Machining an iron

I just picked up the front iron I need to finish my rebuild But it needs to be lapped a bit. There's three spots in the surface I can catch my finger nail on just barely. I want to know how much to expect to pay for this so I don't get screwed. How much would you pay? Also, how much should I have them lap the surface? I'll post pictures later if that would help.

Well, few companies offer this service. I think racing beat, atkins, mazdatrix. You need to lap till the lip you catch your nail on is gone, or if you go by the spec book until the limit is reached I've heard lapping decreases life because you eliminate the nitrate coating, which hardens the iron surface. You may be better off sourcing a better iron.

There have been plenty of people on this forum that have surface ground and renitrided their irons. If you know a machinist that can get it down you can save some bucks. I suggest talking to a local machine shop that regularly sends stuff to ion nitriding. Make sure they know that the iron is already nitrided. It will effect how the machinist goes about it.

You don't want a real shiny surface before nitriding. The factory surface is Blanchard ground. The marks are still visible on used irons. I hit mine with a 150 grit polishing stone before sending them out.
