Machining Apex Grooves

What is the best way to machine the apex seal grooves? I can do it with a mill or an EDM? Also what are the best reference points for centering everything up when we cut? I was going to use the bearing as a refereance and make dowls that fit in the corner seal holes to square everything up.

Either or will work; edm is $$$

Keep in mind used rotors are usually twisted.

I know either will work but what is the best way to setup the rotor to be machined.

We have 2 EDM units here and one of the guys I work with will do the work for me. Rotors are a pretty big chunk of metal to twist, not to mention I don't see how there is any force applied to them in a way to twist them...

I'll check them on the CMM in a few minutes for flatness.

the faces move around..... detonation is enough force to dent and bend things

Well the guys here at work say I can keep my tolerances tighter if I use the EDM but the mill will be faster to use. If I can just find out what references to use to perfectly align the apex grooves for machining I should be golden.

Ok, we've decided to cut the apex seal grooves with the mill a thou or two smaller than the actual 3 mm apex seal and then surface grind them to a precise clearance. We thinking about centering the cuts off of dowels inserted into the corner seals. If there is a better way (which I'm sure there must be) someone let me know.

Thanks,
K6
