Lubricating My Hose? (get yer mind outta the gutter)

OK so I'm going to be redoing some of the small water hoses, and figured that like most things, it will work better with a little lube

I've used Vasoline and (*Note, do not leave in direct sun on 90+ day)
I've used Astro-glide (water residue makes this a little difficult on some hose.
But I am looking for better.

Motor oil?
Grease?
Some special hose to metal barb lubricant??

Get it- or something similar- from your friendly local hydraulic hose specialist.

When installing them on an automotive production line, we use 50/50 water/alcohol.

i just spit on it. always worked, doesnt hurt anything. for the love of god, NEVER use oil on a rubber line, unless its made for it, you just destroyed the line.

silicon! It's made for rubber anyways, thats what we use at the dealership to aid mounting tires. Also, if you've never seen hose pliers, you should get them, they are the ****! They're are a few different kinds of hose pliers, the one's i'm referring to separates the hose from the tube, slide the tool between the hose and the tube, squeeze the handle and voila! well it's not always that easy, but it's worth it. I bought mine at Harbor Freight for like $3 bucks or something like that.

never use wd-40 or any kind of regular oil on rubber parts. silicone is usually what's used for anything rubber. i like silglide. it's like silicone vaseline.

let me reiterate myself/backstep for a sec

to remove the hoses, split the hoses with a razor blade, then find something (i use a pick set) and walk it around the inside of the hose where it sits on the fittings.
to reinstall new hoses, specially if they are brand new hoses, i spit on the end of them, sometimes you might have to use water (if they are coolant hoses, then you can use a mix of coolant and water), just be sure the hose sits properly then install the NEW hose clamps.
a tool i like to use to get off hoses is a door panel popper tool.

You can also use alcohol based hand sanitizer to lube the hose. It's gone in about 2-3 minutes.

Just don't smoke while you are using it.

Quick spray of brake clean has always done it for me. Have hoses that are 6+ years old and show no ill effects from using it.

Quite off thread subject but....

if they get water inside your tires and it gets below freezing temperatures you'll have chunks of ice rumbling in the wheels, I've never seen it done that way so I really don't even know if there is water involved? I try to put on tires without the silicon because I've heard that on high horsepower cars, or a car you drive hard, you can actually cause the wheel to spin inside the tire. So the wheel spins so fast and because it's slippery from the silicon, the wheel slips inside the tire and throws the whole shabang out of balance. I sometimes will just use the silicon on side at the very end of the mounting for like a 10" path, but some tires are a biatch (low profiles).
