the LSD or a sticker or something telling you that you have one? I think on the first page someone said there should be some kind of label on the differential but I can't verify.

you have to spin it with the car in neutral, not in gear.

The round gold Championship sticker had the last year that a RX-7 won the GTU championship. Since you have a 88, the last year that the RX-7 won the GTU champion would have been 87 (since the 88 season didn't end until the end of 88).

There for a 84 would have a 83 championship sticker. Or a 86 would have a 85 championship sticker.

If a diff rattles almost violently sometimes at low RPMs (not sure if it's the diff exactly, but it is from the rear of the car), is that a sign of worn clutch plates, need of rebuild, or what else?
(this happens occasionally and only at from a stand still, not when tires are locked)

Hey diff guys,

I'm not attempting a threadjack by any means but this seems to be the active rear diff post, I am confused as to what kind of diff came in our cars.

It would appear as though the rx7's that were equipped with a LSD came with either an "open" type lsd or a "viscous" type, does this depend on the model or the year? I have an '87 TII and want to upgrade to a Kaaz, but they have two different part #'s, one to replace an open type and one to replace a viscous type lsd.

Is "open" a type of clutch lsd? Sorry for the newbish questions but you guys seem to know your stuff. I also have a '88 GXL w/ an lsd but am not sure what kind that is either, any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS SO MUCH!!! RX7 Club rules.

I guess if the S4's came with a clutch type and the s5's with a viscous then they probably are referring to the clutch type as open....just confused me.

NJGreenBudd, just so you know the S4 TII rear diff is sought after due to it being a clutch type and being able to handle A LOT of power.

It is very strong. You may want to re-think upgrading to the Kaaz, and maybe just rebuild the stock differential.

Just my .02.

James

There's 3 diff's, open, which is not an LSD at all and came in all years, then there's the clutch type in some S4's and the viscous in some S5's.

My car had an open diff (confirmed when I took it out) and I could slide it around corners just fine on wet roads or at the autocross, both rear tires would ALWAYS let go at the same time. I only ever experianced one wheel spin when the front bar came undone and it had terrible body roll.

Well my diff is shot, it screams when you drive, but ont he kaaz website it only has options to replace either an "open" or a "viscous" type.... hasn't anyone instaled one of these in a TII. My TII is an 87, S$ so it's a clutch type, but I don't see an option for that, I'm gonna email them i guess.

The S4 LSD will have a TAG.It is located on the rear of the Differential, and is held on by the filler Nut(where you fill the Diff with Fluid).it says "use LSD type Fluid Only".The Open Differentials on the N/A Obviously Do not have this tag.,But sometimes guys will fill the Diif up on their LSD Diff and not Bother to keep the tag on(the tag gets Bent, cruudy etc,,But it is Also used as a "crush washer" around the filler nut). The TII Differentials Are Lsd.,and Do not Have a Tag stating so.

Having it make noise like that indicates a problem with the ring and pinion gears, not the center section. The TII and the FD share the same sized diff, a KAZZ for the FD will work for the FC TII as well.

This is the response from Kaaz whenI asked which diff would fit my '87 TII w/ a clutch type diff:

Hi,
Thanks for your inquiry.
The part number for your vehicle will be SBZ1310 or 1315.
We do not have enough data on hand about the clutch type
oem lsd offered here in States. Most oem lsd used in Japan
was viscous for FC and torsen for FD.
Last time we received an order from one FC owner with
clutch type lsd used the SBZ1310 and just used the open
diff axles from non-lsd FC or FD.
Best Regards,
Ray / Kaaz USA

So what do you think? I'm not sure anymore, I might very well look for a rebuild kit for my diff or another low mileage clutch type diff to swap in.
