Is there any way I can check if my 86 gxl has an LSD without taking apart the differential?

2 skid marks=lsd
1 skid mark = open dif

 

well if you go to the F&Q at the top of the 2nd gen section it would say if your model came equiped with it.

 

floor it around a tight corner. If only the inside wheel spins, you have no LSD.

 

86-88 GXL's came with LSD's... it's in the FAQ~

 

A burnout will not prove if u have an lsd or not i used to have a single spinner and it would leave 2 black marks doing a burnout. Jack up the rear both sides and spin the wheel. spin same way its an lsd, if one spins or the other wheel spins the opposite way you need a welder

That would be wrong. That only proves poor traction.

There are not too many base, Luxury and Se models that you could not do two burn out marks with and not one of them had a LSD
