lower fuel rail ?

i have been trying to get my car to idle right, while working on it today i removed the lower fuel rail. the plastic cover piece came off the end and there was a screw that fell out with it. the screw has a rubber o-ring on it and i noticed that it goes in the end of the rail, the piece that looks like a pressure regulator.
so can someone tell me what that screw if for?
i have an 88 tubro II

pulsation dampener.
Going to need a new one.
They like to leak and start engine fires.
good thing you caught it early.
once the screw comes out, its just a matter of time.

they tend to come out themselves, but can faster if tampered with. but Brodie is right, this is a SUPER common issue and 99% odds it's a result of the car's age and not someone screwing with it. You can buy another pulsation dampener or replace it with a banjo bolt. I have no PD, my banjo bolt works just peachy.

You'll have to do a search to find the right size, or take your PD or fuel rail to have the threads checked, then you can find a bolt. Or I bet Atkins Rotary or Mazdatrix sells them.

edit: just checked, they only sell new PD's, and QUE CARO!

"banjo bolt size is 12mm x 1.25"

Don't forget new crush washers.

Here's a link where Mazdatrix warns of the problems a faulty PD can cause.

summit has an aluminum one from Earl's Fittings, but when i tried to install it, it cracked at the banjo holes. I ended up buying a steel one off of ebay, try searching "12x1.25 banjo"

Yeah no reason to use aluminum for this part.

I went to my local Mazda dealer and got the banjo bolt and crush washers and o rings and grommets for the primary injectors for under 25 bucks. While your changing out the PD rebuild the fuel rail while your there.
Since you have to pull the intake you might as well have some vacuum hose and fuel hose available as well because things will be brittle.

I need to do the whole thing: banjo upgrade, injector rebuild, vac and fuel lines.

So to do the banjo upgrade I'm assuming I need more than just the bolt right? I need the female banjo fitting also. Did your dealer have that too?

I don't know what you mean by female banjo fitting.
You will need the banjo bolt to take the place of the PD, two crush washers, grommets and o-rings if you want to rebuild the fuel rail, intake gasket and various vacuum lines and fuel lines. It's not that hard, did it in about two hours.
And about 6 beers.

yeah now that i think of it, OP if you can't get the intake gasket off in one piece, which after a few years' use you never can, then you're definitely going to want one. plug your intake runners with clean rags as soon as the UIM is off, too. you wouldn't believe how many 'WOE IS ME I DROPPED A NUT/BOLT/***** DOWN MY INTAKE!' threads we get.

Quick question, do both the primary AND secondary fuel rails have PD units? Also, any other advantages (besides no leaks) of switching to a banjo bolt setup, I'm assuming the PD units were installed for a reason.

Anyone got any pictures of an upgraded fuel rail with banjo bolts?

EDIT: to answer my own questions.

still looking for pics tho
