low compression... maybe?

Ok, I had a compression check on my car this last saturday, or the week before, and it had 50 on the back and 60 on the front. Well I went back to my apartment and my dad has been working with it for the past 2 days putting oil and ether in the plug holes trying to start it. Well he's gotten it to run for 10sec straight but still no luck. He did another compressions check today and he put the checker on the trailing plug holes and is geting 60 on the back and 80 on the front. Which plug holes is he supposed to use? He put the checker on the leading holes and got 100 on the front and 80 on the back, whats up?
