Love my 90 TII I just bought, but something feels wrong..

Hey all..

So when I am driving the car and I hit it, the car does pretty well, but around 5-6k rpm the car stops pulling and starts feeling jerky...

Like It feels like someone is pushin then stopping than pushing than stopping.. It's real strange.. Any ideas?

Should I get the Tranny checked when I can save some $$? IS it something else?

Anyone else experience this?

is the car stock?? has the exhaust been modified at all??

btw, trany wouldnt cause those kind of problems.....

you could be hitting fuel cut, is the stock boost gauge going allmost allt he way up?? also check if hte throttle position sensor is adjusted correctly, its in the factory service manual in the FAQ section of the 2nd gen forum.

needs a full tuneup (fuel filter, injectors, plugs, wires, vacuum leak, TPS out of adjustment), clogged cat, etc...

well ok lets give more info.

The car has had a few things done (by the person/people who owned it prior).
It's got a Turbo Back Exhaust system
slight wastegate porting to control boost creep
3" air intake
new airpump and alternator belts.
There IS no cat on the car right now, I've got a brand new one in the trunk but it's just a straight pipe right now.

Now.. I'm not used to turbo'ed engines this i my first one so pardon any stupidity.
I barely get any boost in first gear, marginal amouns in second.. in about 3rd gear and up I start seeing about 8psi (relatively close to that). The boost doesn't max out.

When the car is in higher RPM's there's a VERY airy noise, but I THINK it might just be the exhaust the kid put on. It's extremely loud.....

I definately want to check the fuel filter AND pump. I know sometimes if hte car stalls ((in the cold mornings) it doesn't even crank unless you let it sit for like 30 seconds or something..

Does any of this info bring new light to the subject? A tune-up might be just what the dr ordered.. now if I could save some money to get it done/get the parts I need...

What A/F ratio should I be seeing around 5k? the monitor in the car is real low ratio.. I'll watch that later tonight or tomorrow and post that too..

if it is very noisy, it could be a boost leak
afm is before the turbo, so the turbo could be sucking in 11psi worth of air, afm is giving gas for 11psi worth of fuel, but engine only see 8psi due to leak??? and since stock ecu tends to get real rich above 6k... it makes matter worst ????

What's the best way to check for a boost leak? What do I need to do to fix it?

It sounds like someone took an air hose and is just spraying all the air out of a compressor..

are you having idling problems, unsteadyness or anything. If you have a leak in boost you should have a leak at idle.

If you didn't list a 'Fuel Cut Defenser' you should probably check to make sure you've got that covered. Without an FCD, if the boost creeps to above 8.6psi, your fuel will be temporarily cut-off to the rear rotor, causing bucking and hesitation. If you don't know for sure if there is an FCD on the TII, ask the previous owner. If he doesn't know, you likely don't have one. They're available for around $50 used.

The really 'loud' noise under WOT in the higher RPM's really sounds like a boost-leak. Also, the fact that you're seeing barely any boost in 1st gear, barely any in second etc. means that something is not hooked up correctly (or whatever).

Make sure the WG actuator arm hasn't come undone, but more importantly--check the turbo's compressor housing 'nipple'. I've had this pop off during hard boosting on both of my TII's, in essence disconnecting my WG. On my old TII, when this nipple popped out, I could barely boost at all in 1st and 2nd, and in 3rd I wouldn't see full boost until 5k RPM's, before it bled off quickly by redline. BUT, on my latest Turbo II, when the nipple popped out, my boost would spike like crazy, to 15+psi... The turbo would get CRAZY loud, because so much 'boost' was being forced out of the hole left by the (disconnected) nipple.

Definitely check it out. If you're unfamiliar with the nipple I'm referring to; look right above your turbo's inlet duct (intake). There will be a small *L* shaped nipple, with a vac. line going several inches to a nipple that goes to your waste-gate. I dunno, check it out.

Ok I did research based on the STOCK boost gauge.. The one that reads in PSI the kid never hooked up the electrical to to make it light.......

First gear: -20 mmHG (absolutely no movement of the needle)
Second gear: 0 mmHG
Third Gear: Couldn't get a clear reading, I'd say by the NON stock gauge it was reading maybe 3-4 psi
Forth Gear and Fifth it gets to like 8 psi or so.

Does that sound like a boost leak or what? Seems like it to me yet I don't know..

How does the FCD work? I'll try to get an email to the guy I bought it from.. sounds to me like it's not on the car. But seeing it's got that hesitation feeling with a complete lack of boost it looks like THAT could be the problem..

I'll wrk on finding that L shaped nipple too..

Oh I almost forgot.. I've got one of these:
http://www.apexi-usa.com/product_ele...=202&pageNum=1

I'm learning to work it a little.

The AIR readout says .1% at WOT.. Can that be right?

AS for idling, the car isnt' real rough.. only when I first start it ona cold day does it want to cut out on me (and I have to hold the gas a little). But any other time it seems smooth to me..

And I feel quite retarded with the whole tranny thing.. That makes no sense when the car has no problems on any gear at low rpms..

My car does the same thing where throughout the powerband it kinda cuts out, but i have an N.A., i'm a mechanic so my car is perfectly maintained, it has a brand new clutch and flywheel in it and it still does it.......i still have some testing to do, ima check the fuel pressure whil i drive it to see if it drops when it does it. i think i might need a better fuel pump.

NEw info:

She's VERY testy to the cold. I couldn't get her to idle for a while, and she would do that loss of power in gear in first gear at like 3k rpm until she warmed up..

I hate those rims too.. They don't look TOO bad with the centercaps in, but I have my plans to replace them when $$ allows.. FIrst I want to get her working right!
