To be honest, I have no idea what the factory set the cold idle speed at, but mine has always been 900-1000rpm. All you need to do is maintain a smooth idle while the engine's cold, so any more than that is just increasing engine wear unnecessarily. The cold idle speed is easily changed by adjusting the screw on the back of the TB. This might lower your 2800rpm start too.
well I just start in gear and my thermowax is gone so my cold start up is 800 rpm now

Not my car. Thats what you make sure you have a good parking brake for. Doesn't it stress your tranny quite a bit if your on a hill in gear?
it's not resting on the tranny. all the weight is on the brake. but good habit to park in gear incase it failed or something happened. although I don't even think my engine can hold my car on a hill LOL. I think I tried that once.

No isn't the car using the tranny to hold the car when you leave it in gear without the brake on?

You don't do it without the brake on! Leaving it in gear is only a safegaurd in case the handbrake doesn't hold.

unless you live in the prairies....i'd recommend putting it into gear as a safeguard.

it'd suck to come back to it, only to find it had rolled down the hill into an intersection/pole/car...

i dont trust my ebrake farther than i could kick it :P

I usually only use the handbrake too (that's what it's for), but if I park on a steep hill I'll leave it in 1st just in case. This is a lesson learnt from experience...

Yup, that's what I do, and its pretty darn easy. Just tap that gas with your foot, and POOF it goes off.

Definitely understand that. But I have a truck that doesn't hold itself when left in gear in my driveway. I have to turn the wheel all the way one way to give it a chance since the e-brake doesn't work. Definitely don't want that happening to my car.

Scott,
so what exactly did you do to get a 800/900 rpm idle during a cold start? Can you provide a summery?

Thank you,

a GTUs from Vanouver
