Loud unkown screeching sound

Now besides my car dropping to 100rpm and dieing from time to time. My car is now making a lound screeching sound when I drive. At first I thought I might of left my e-brake up a tad(which I never do) so i double checked pushed it down didnt move any lower. I started to drive again and then screech screech.Over and Over again. Its not like one long screech its like in pulses(-- -- -- -- --) any ideas? I think i migh just have to check it into the local shop(which Iwould really hae to do)....

So? When you drive around the revs go up and the belts spin faster and if they are worn or old they become more prone to screeching. Or if it is only happening on turns while driving, for example, it might be a PS or PS belt issue (if you have it that is).

It's just a suggestion for something to check before taking it to a shop and spending a bunch of money.

Hmm alright. Could still be the power steering system (if you have it), or some part of the turning assembly.

Your brakes may be so badly worn down that it's grinding against the rotor.
Usually there's pad indicator tabs that rub against the rotor to warn the driver the pads are wearing down to minimum. That could be it. If it is, you better change that quick before it scours the rotors.

If you mean when you turn the steering wheel, then it could be the power steering pump is bad. It happened to me before. You can try and use the Lucas power steering oil. IMHO, it's only a temporary solution. Change it out with a new one or a known good one. You could also put in a manual rack. I like it a lot better.

If you mean while you're moving and the rims are spinning, then it could be your brakes. It may be that you need new pads and the warning shim is touching the rotor. At the same time from the symptom you describe, a plusing screech, could mean that your rotors are warped.

Could you be a little more specific? Where is the sound coming from? Does it happen when you're doing anything in particular? ie. making a turn, braking, accelerating...

Sorry if I was being vague. But truly I cant really tell where the noise is coming from. I think its coming from the front of the car(drivers side) or possibly rear. The only thing I am sure of is its on the drivers side.

Check to make sure you have power steering fluid in the resevior. Then have a friend turn the steering wheel while you stand in front of the engine bay. If the power steering pump is bad, then it'll make a loud screeching noise. If that's not the problem, jack up the car and check your brakes. First check the brake pads, try to see if they look thin. Also check the rotors to make sure that they're not grooved.
