Lotsa miles on a 88 convert, what to do?

I am very seriously considering buying a beautiful black convertible for about $2500. The thing I am worried about is the mileage on the chassis.

Its got 177k on the body and about 50k on a rebuilt engine, this thing drives and looks like its brand new but does lack the power of my T2 (I know its a turbo).

My question would be, is this too many miles on the body to pay that price for? Is it even worth it? Anything else I should watch out for.. Thanks guys and gals. -Evan

I'm not a vert fan, because I don't own one but if the car is in as good of shape as you say it is it should be a good deal. Consider who you buying from and what you want the car for. If you want a fast car this is probably not the best answer for you. try looking for an 89-92 vert if you like the body stile. More horespower is good horsepower.

True and true, for reliablity which would be better an 87 TII with 110k on the body or convert with 177k on the body with a new engine with 50k. Anymore input appreciated, thanks.

Well
Buy it, vert are fun in the summer, look for rust and discolored carpet etc if it all looks clean then buy it up, verts usually sell for a little more then 2.5k

Ya there is some discolored carpet, meaning water leaks?

Also there is one part that looks like its bondo'd over not a big deal but its on the rear quarter panel...

Well I somewhat car about the body, there is one large spot that is bondo'd over that is not in sync with the lines of the body, basically I might have to rebondo it or something. What do ya think?

I would get it, i have one and love mine.. where is the bondo repair on it... could you just find a junkyard body pannel to replace it... would prolly be cheaper (and lighter) and look better than trying to fix it (and you would have to paint anyway

I'd grab it...my '89 Vert ran me about 3K for a car that had 159K miles (motor and body, no rebuild that I know of), so from my point of view, that's not a bad deal...even if there is some body damage to take care of...

Did you not look at the car very close the first time? Just curious. You originally described the car as "looks and runs like new", then as "Ya there is some discolored carpet, meaning water leaks? Also there is one part that looks like its bondo'd over not a big deal but its on the rear quarter panel...
".

??????????

Does the owner have any records of service/ repair work? Anything to PROVE the engine only has 50k miles? Do they have a CARFAX?

Buy it !!!! Sounds to me like the car is just getting broken in. In Washington you don't have to worry about rust. I just bought and 88 Vert with 110,000 for $1,400. But, it was a South Dakota car and it has some rust that I will have to deal with.

Why wouldn't I have to worry about rust in washington? And the car looks good but Im just worried about the bondo'd over area.

BRealistic, thanks for noticing what I'm saying but I'm asking for advice with those things not an interrogation. -Evan
