lots of smoke after rebuild

did i do something wrong? i rebuilt it and about 20 miles on it it started smoking reletively bad. it seems to do it worse at idle than when i m driving down the road but it might just be that i cant see it when im driving. im pretty sure that i put the oil control rings in perfectly. i removed them and re-inserted them into the rotors like 4 times to make sure that the springs were right and on the right side and everything is seated properly. could one have ripped while the motor is running? i dont want a smokey new motor.. smoeone help!

I just rebuilt my s4 also and i noticed when i started it for the first time i smoked really bad for the first 10 min or so. I changed the oil and it cleared right up. I think it was because the oil was contanminated with petrolem jelly. Try this first and if you still have the same problem do a compression check. Also you should to a pressure test of the coolant system just to make sure your side housing seals aren't leaking

my motor smoked for a while after rebuild..same with other rebuilds i've done. its totally common because of all the stuff you used during your rebuild gets burnt over time.
if everything seems to check out fine i wouldnt worry about it just yet

ok. the water seals are good.

something that concerns me though. i was chasing an oil leak and determined that it was coming from the oil filter. i took the filter off and oil poured out. this has never happened to me before. since the filter is upside down i thought it drained quickly. i have taken filters off right after shutting off the car before and they never poured oil out. i poured oil in the pedistal and it doesnt drain very fast. how fast should it drain? im thinking there might be some kind of blockage causing the slow drain the leak and the burning.. maybe? has anyone experienced this before? thanks again

chill man, don't start freaking out. give it a couple of weeks and see what happens. it doesn't have all that many miles on it right now. Watch the oil pressure though.

Yea thats not right, but remember the gauge is over 15 years away so it might not be accurate.

I think 80 at idle is kind of on the high side, unless you've upgraded your oil pressure regulator, even then it may still be a bit high. Are you using stock oil press. guage or aftermarket? The stock one isn't exactly the most reliable btw.

its the stock oil system. im using the stock gauge but i can see it move. it drops a bit at idle. my rotary god friend checked it out and said that its probably the oil control ring spring is not seated and it "should seat eventually" so 2 miles or 20000 miles. its anyones guess when it seats or if it ever does. i guess ill just keep buying oil and take all the glares in stride.

may the rotary gods be with me

First thing is first, determine actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

Sounds like you made a mistake.

ok its 50 at idle and just over 60 at speed.. i got the smoke to stop by venting the oil fill tube nipple to the atmosphere. smoke went away and oil press is good. yay me!
