lots of smoke

hey guys im having a smoking problem with my 87 base.
i have no cats, and it smokes really bad up around and above 6k. when i check my coolent i dont get bubbles and i dont leak/ loose any coolnt. i have also seam to be burning more oil then it should. i think i need to add like 1 1/2-2 qaurts every month (although sometimes not that much) the only other time it smokes is when the motor is cold and i first start it. smokes for a few mins. does this mean im about to pop a motor or is this normal?
my mods are in the my sig. and help would be great.

thanks for your time and input.
